Competetition running on Times on line - dream up a new law.
Of course it wouldn't be complete without some crackpot suggestion by tragic 2000 on 20 limits

"Steve Housham of the Transport 2000 lobby group wants to introduce the Responsible Road Speeds Act: a 20mph limit in all residential areas, 20mph on mixed-use country lanes, and a cut in the national speed limits to 50mph (60mph on motorways). “Current speed limits do not respect people through providing safer streets, nor the environment through reducing carbon emissions,” he says."-- just for the comedy element .

THE COMPETITION

The six best suggestions will win a pair of tickets to the Royal Automobile Club Tourist Trophy at Silverstone on Sunday May 7. The race is the opening round of the FIA GT championship contested by teams from Aston Martin, Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari.

Thought this site could do better than the "experts"

Judging by the fall in safety standards ,we can't do worse.

There should be a law against new laws, perhaps?

20mph on mixed-use country lanes,

Genius idea! Would mean that I had the choice of:

a) Going 3x the speed limit everyday on the way to work for half an hour each way, meaning a lovely trip to court / prison and losing licence.

or...

b) taking three times longer than it does now to get to work, each way.

Great idea!

Banning laws or the creation of if they are sparked by plitixcal pressure or the 'something must be done' cry from the press and public e.g. Dangerous Dogs, Firearms Ban, Speed Cams.

And a ban on political special interest groups and party funding via loans, cash for questions, holidays, gifts and the like

Not a bad idea -Pete, or a law to make a serious review of laws 5 year after the inception to look at their flaws and consider if they were really necessary.

With some emergency services restricted to 50% above the posted speed limit just imagine a fire engine and ambulance
c r a w l i n g along to a residential emergency at 30 mph...priceless!

I believe in (One of) the city states of ancient greece. Anybody proposeing a new law had to do so standing on a stool with a noose round their neck.

If the vote went against them the stool was kicked away

An idea that has some merit, methinks!

:)

I'd like to introduce the "If you don't know what you're talking about, shut up Act" whereby any group or individual making a statement in the media demanding that something should be changed will be required to prove that they have qualifications or experience in the area that they are trying to meddle with then they are required to shut up. A second offence will result in their propsed law being brought into legislation but only applying to them (or in the case of an organisation, to their members that supported it) for two years. After this mandatory two year period then the proposals can be given the current level of consideration that lobby groups these days.

This should go down a treat with new Labour as they love to control what we are allowed to say and think.

I would like to see that one as well but while the 'Media' have free rein they will drag anybody out who voices an opinion.

I have been interviewed several times, if you don't say exactly what 'they' want to hear they just don't use your quote and find somebody else.

That's better than I'd assumed... I thought that if it didn't fit with what they wanted, they just made it up..!
