The super-cameras mean penalty notices can be printed and sent out within half an hour of the offence.

I thought that NIPs had to be hand signed by representative of the Chief Constable...

So discretion is well and truly dead then.

It kid of reminds me of the film "Demolition Man" as soon as an offence is committed the fine is issued immediately. Seemed far-fetched back then.

The £50,000 devices are set on top of 16ft-high poles to protect them from vandals or protesters.

Ha ha haa!!

Some clown cut this vehicle (which advertises an off road driving experience centre) down and let it crash through the roof of the building below.

I dont see a 16 foot pole being a barrier!
My wife reported an accident at Ings, and it was a LONG time before the BiB got there - the Ambulance was quicker in 16 minutes! :P

Looking at the height of the camera I recon it may be possible to put a hood over your number plate to prevent it being read at that angle.

So are the tickets legal if no one has checked them for errors?

Of course, being that high means that it will take a long while for them to wash off any well-aimed paintballs..

Not that I'm condoning such acts, but the door at the bottom wouldn’t take much removing for the right people, cut the phone link, hey presto. Or make a nice cosy fire inside the pole, heat rises.

Does anyone know if the road markings are actually in the same place as for Gatsos? As I'd have thought that you slow down when you see the camera and it is actually picturing your numberplate at a distance - when a number of road users may have speed up again..... :x

The (position of the) speed sensor strips are obvious, that's the bit where you need to be legal.

If I interpret the relevant documents correctly: GATSO style corroboration markings aren't required.

There has been one placed about 100yards after a Gatso on the A38 heading towards Filton from the M5 (just before the end of the Filton Airfield runway) for about a year, which is very sneaky positioning.

The weakest point is probably the presure sensitive road sensors as if you cut them then they can detect nothing, and it requires closing the road or at least a lane in order to repair. So about 20 seconds, a 1" chisel and a heavy hammer then.

Road markings vary with some looking like Gatso markings (no reason for it other than to make it obvious that it is a speed trap), while others have a couple of small bars around the sensors, and others have none.

I agree that the position of the road sensors is obvious, but only if you have trained yourself to recognise that 3 very thin parallel bars of different coloured tarmac spaced about 2 foot apart means speed trap. I have, as the same sensor set-up is used in Worcestershire; originally to hook up to hidden police camera equipment, but in more recent years to hook up to Talivans. Having been entrapped by unmarked Police cars working together to bully drivers into speeding though the original very hidden set-up, this type of camera and the talivan is relatively obvious. It is a shame that I now put more attention into spotting this type of sensor (which can be tricky on NSL roads) than looking for real hazards, but that is what the DfT want us to do isn't it?
