I was stopped this afternoon by three of County Durham's finest. Turns out my car had scored a "hit" on a roadside ANPR set-up and had come up as "stolen". Having convinced them of my identity and the of the fact that i've owned the car for 3 years they admitted that it was probably the ANPR unit that was in error by "Getting a digit or two wrong"!

I have no problem whatsoever in being stopped in this way, after all i'd like to think if my motor was nicked they might get it back for me, but...

If ANPR can get that sort of thing wrong, i.e totally mis-identify a vehicle, how can it and similar technologies be used to "trap" speeding motorists??

Discuss..........

ANPR does misread numbers plates there is no doubt in that, lettering spacing can all affect the read plate, the operator relays the hit to the patrol officers for a stop check, simple PNC check clarifys the PNC marker

OK, does that mean SPECS etc also get it wrong?

Does that mean that ANPR will never be used for speed checking?

Doubt it.

SPECS and congestion charging use the same techonology. The only question is how automated are they, and is there any checking done by humans before a fine is sent out?

Even if there is, I don't want MY tax money pissed away paying some team of jobsworth dickheads to sit looking at photos of number plates all day every day.

The police I don't mind paying for - this I most definately do!
