What a shame that they (yet again) totally fail to differentiate between the US definition of SUV which is a truck, and the UK version which with a few minor exceptions is a slightly jacked up normal car.

It is a good idea that they are asking for some research into this area, but bad that they have jumped the gun and assumed that they already know what the results of the research will be.

Will they also be calling for the banning of buses and commercial vehicles, or is their agenda of "seeking to change social attitudes" just aimed at motorists?

From my memory, history teachers should carry a health warning pointing out that they only teach a very slanted, narrow view of history.

Delegates at the ATL annual conference in Gateshead will vote on a resolution to "seek to change social attitudes" to 4x4s and SUVs.

How can so-called teachers be so STUPID

This is what happens when your only view of road safety comes out of Greenpeace PR. Lets not bother with actual industry data shall we.. :x

Its a shame that 4x4 sales represent the single largest increase in car registrations.....

looks like they have already lost the battle.

He asked the UK government to carry out more research on the types of vehicles involved in accidents.

Look at the SMMT data f*ckwit. it already exists. It shows them to be amongst the safest vehicles on the road.

Would have thought the initials of one teaching union would be a give away --NUT

The driver's high vantage point also made it harder to see pedestrians

er why..........surely as you are higher you can see over the parked cars and have a better view of pedestrians

He said international research showed 4x4s were more likely to kill small children than normal, lower, cars, as they tended to collide with their chests or heads.

This is incomplete. It says RESEARCH shows they are more LIKELY, not STATISTICS.

That's a bit like saying research shows exposure to nuclear fall out would kill you, without discussing the probability of such an event.
After the interview was played on Radio Cumbria this morning, the host made a comment on the supposed impartiallity of the teacher and his comments.

History teacher Phil Whaley said 4x4s and sports utility vehicles were more likely than conventional cars to kill children and the danger was increased when bull bars were attached.

Hmm ... and that would include those modern 4x4s that have higher Euro-NCAP ratings than many conventional cars (CR-V, X-Trail, etc.)? If you look at the data, you'll see that 4x4s are about on par with other cars of their period. There might be some "bad" 4x4s, but then there are also "bad" other cars.

If thats the case, what does research have to say about buses? I'm sure the consequence of a child vs bus acciedent would be worse than a 4x4 accident.

Lets prohibit buses before its too late! Our children are doomed!

Lets not forget black cabs, all 3.5 t vans ,and other vehicles with a similar front profile where the top of the bonnet is higher than a childs head.
Then again , bicycles fall into this category as the handlebars on some ar the same height. [/taking P mode off]

Alterantively why not ban all small children .
