Am a member of a safety organisation, and there has been a few threads on driving related issues, some interesting comments and some cringe worthy: "And in any event; what's wrong with emphasising speed? The Police claim that speed is a factor in 30% of all accidents (most recent statement, up from the previous 10%). I utterly disagree. Speed is a factor in 100% of accidents."

Are these threads a good advert for 'safety professonals' or do they re-inforce the stereotype ???

There seems to be a certain ammount of "a little bit of knowledge.." going on.

Such as the comments about the 407 driver who got hit by ice following too close. Obviously nobody has read Roadcraft or else they would know that closing the gap when you intend to overtake is a valid and accepted technique. The original poster also seems to think that because he had seen ice falling from the truck the 407 driver should have known about it even though there is no indication the 407 was anywhere in the vicinity.

Some of the comments on LHD trucks are concentrating too much on what can be done to the trucks and not enough on what other road users can do for themselves.

Overall pretty much what I would expect from a group of people concerned with safety but not specialising in motoring.

The one on Blind Spots with LHD tractor units was interesting.
I was always told when learning "look at the mirrors of the vehicle in front, you should see the drivers head. If not, then he probably cannot see you."
Even cars have blind spots - and A-posts which obscure large amounts of road.
Other vehicles should at least be aware of the potential, and drivers of vehicles with blind spots can fit additional aids such as blind spot inserts in mirrors, and even additional mirrors if it is a serious problem.

I once got a lift in a Lada Riva 4x4 who had fitted a mirror in the bottom right of the windscreen, which was viewed via a similar mirror in the bottom left, angled inwards. This arrangement allowed a view around any vehicle he chose to overtake.
I have not tried it abroad, but I am sure it could be done where the screen allowed the use of mirrors with suckers on - £2.99 in Halfords.

Also relavent - left and right hand door or "wing" mirrors have different magnifications!! Cars appear further back in one than the other.

So do the top and bottom mirrors on Transits ( and probably HGV) AND OTHER 3.5 TONNERS.
