Can anyone remind me of the proper terminology for this logical fallacy:

Person A: "Speed cameras help save the lives of children."

Person B: "I don't think speed cameras are a good idea."

Person A: "So you're happy to see children die on the roads then?"

I know that - but it's a line of argument you often encounter and I know it's a widely recognised logical fallacy, I'm trying to find out the correct name for it.

It's just the same as:

Person A: "The death penalty is an effective deterrent for murder."

Person B: "I don't think the death penalty a good idea."

Person A: "So you're happy to see people being murdered then?"

It looks like a Burden of Proof fallacy.

Have a look here Peter...http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/

I don't know the name of that one off hand, but there's a fair catalogue here: http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies

I've had a quick browse, but not found it yet...

No it isn't - it's more like a straw man.

No it isn't - it's more like a straw man.

No, I think a straw man is where one person advances a distorted and extreme version of someone else's proposition.

Whereas burden of proof is where an unsubstantiated assertion is advanced as fact.

In a sense they are mirror images of each other.

Person A: "I think cameras in roadworks can cause more problems than they solve."

Person B: "So you're happy to see roadworkers killed by speeding motorists?"

is a straw man.

Does it not also contain an element of "false dilemma", in that it is presented in the form that there are only two possible outcomes - children are saved or killed - when in reality there are more options that aren't being considered

Had a similar Q&A with the SCP at the motorcycle show.

It started off by me saying I disagree with camer enforcement. They came back and said "so you think its OK to speed then"

One hour later we agreed to differ.............

Actually Sixy is closest I think. It's just bad maths

A implies B
A implies C

Does NOT imply a logical relationship between B and C

It is dangerous stuff!

Cars have paintwork
Cars kill people

Paintwork kills people? People have paintwork?
