50 is a good speed sometimes. If I'm in a real hurry, I drive at the maximum speed I can safely, within the limit. If I'm in no hurry at all, I don't go anywhere! And if it is in between, I drive at somewhere less than or equal to the maximum speed I can safely, within the limit, but higher than the speed where I would annoy people! Whether that is 20, 30,40,50, or 60 or even (gasp) 70, depends on those conditions.

You certainly like typing don't you BW? :D

So, if you are driving along at 50, because you are not in a rush, have you considered that if you were to slow to 40, you would decrease your stopping distance and improve your chances of avoiding an accident and perhaps even injury?

If this is the case, why drive at 50? What's your rush?

.........Just run that by me again...... :?

BTW my daughter is taking her driving test next week. Current advice for taking the test (as it was in my day) is drive at the speed limit where it is safe to do so.

if not you get a fail for obstructing traffic.

I guess you yould fail your test if you adopted your driving style....
Perhaps you should go in for a refresher course instead of being a rolling hazard.

Thanks for that, Observer, but it doesn't really apply to me!

It's just that after driving for a living (everything from a horse and cart through to 44-tonne tankers), covering over 2 million miles, I've seen and heard bwerk's type come and go, spouting there rubbish along the way. They talk the talk, but don't cut it on the roads!

You should read, the highway code, section 124 - "do not treat speed limits as a target".

Have a good weekend.

Well done, I can't complain about you. Cut out the Ad Hominem and the clubiness and we might get along.

Actually, I was pulled for 'driving furiously and too fast' in 1956 by an RSPCA ossifer. All I did was let the horse 'have it's head' with an empty cart!

You sound like my wife. Let me know when your passing through and I'll have a man with a flag walk up front.

BTW: I was at the Haddenham Steam Fair (a _must_ see event in Cambridgeshire) last week, and on the way back, I got behind a steam tractor doing about 1mph. On the the A142, a main road. I had to actually overtake somebody.

section 124 (from the official web site)
The speed limit is the absolute maximum and does not mean it is safe to drive at that speed irrespective of conditions. Driving at speeds too fast for the road and traffic conditions can be dangerous. You should always reduce your speed when
the road layout or condition presents hazards, such as bends
sharing the road with pedestrians and cyclists, particularly children, and motorcyclists
weather conditions make it safer to do so
driving at night as it is harder to see other road users.

So where does it say "or when I am not in a hurry"
Maybe you should read up on your highway code. sounds like you may be a bit out of date...

ROFL

This is exactly what you have been saying on the forums for ages now BW. Slow down, stop quicker, less chance of accidents etc.

I knew it was too much to ask that you practice what you preach.

Which one? I have UK, German and Canadian driving licenses. I have passed the test three times, in 76, 77 and 94, and I failed it twice, once in 76 and once in 88. How come? Motor Bike in 76 <pass>, car in 76 <fail>, car in 77 <pass>, car in 88 in Alberta, CA <fail>, car in 94 in Montreal, Quebec <Pass>. I have had a chequered driving career, you might say.

For goodness sake, Gizmo, that is section 104, not 124. Section 124 is the one I mean. Also, 125 asks me to be be patient, which is the opposite of hurrying. So I am patient, but sometimes, when I am in a hurry, I am not as patient as I am when I am not in a hurry. Surely that makes perfect sense to anybody!?!

Yet another case of not practicing what you preach.

Quote:
The trick is not to be in a hurry by scheduling time well.

Just to recap, what we have so far is as follows:

* We should all slow down as this is safer and cuts stopping distances and reduces the chance of a crash (unless you are Basingwerk)

* We should all schedule our time well so as not to be in a hurry (unless you are Basingwerk)

Anything else?

No, me too. I'm into this. We should all slow down and we should all schedule our time well. Not only that, but we should be calm and patient when driving, and we should be prepared for the worst, while hoping for the best. We should share the road with others safely, and the highway code is the best book on how to do that. You may have somehow got the wrong impression before, but this is what I preach!

We should all slow down to a safe speed within the limit at all times. Yes, that's it.
