Seen various debates on the variable speed signs on likes of M42, so has anyone got any info on the status of the orange ones .
As far as i can see Sect 235 HC only speed signs with red outer are mandatory.
Having said that i take the view that untill i prove otherwise the presence of a reduced orange limit is advice of problems ahead untill i see otherwise and that the dropdown is in a set pattern --ie by set steps.

do you mean the difference between a sign showing a red circle and those with orange flashing lights? if so, red circle is mandatory, others are suggested speeds. that is my understanding anyway

Only the ones with the red circle are mandatory. The orange ones are "advisory".

That used to be the case - until now?
I just surfed the highway code and found that the sign in question no longer appears to be advisory:

Image

"Temporary maximum speed limit" - no mention of advisory on the page

http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/signs01.htm

Please someone tell me (and prove to me) that I'm wrong! Is this a really very sneaky manoeuvre?

Oh HC 235 mentions the ones with Red outer, the traffic signs manual ( or the info from it on ABD) metal signs, but couldn't find any mention of the orange one.
Only mention on the page ABD links to is for two 670 type signs.

As smeggy says -is this another backdoor con trick??

And isn't this a good enough reason to make certain that they are still advisory.

(M4 vans hiding on bridges)

Now imagine if these signs weren't advisory - this lot on bridge , signs come on - someone misses signs but sees van at last minute , because of checking speedo...........

Cheers - smeggy - i was getting worried too, but this tells a different story --

Looking at some of the replies a lot of others thought like you and me.
