Wildy has mentioned in passing on PH earlier. She did not introduce as thread to debate and I think an error on her part.

If you look in the "News" forum - you will find the first news
on this story.

To recap

Kay Street, Bolton. speed limit - 40 mph. Time - 9 pm Oct 19th

Ellesse and Becky Gore (identical twins) and some older pals were browsing in the local PC World. They then headed off to a sweety shop and crossed the busy road which leads to St Peter's Way and M60 net etc.

They crossed the road - but Ellesss (9) is unlucky as the last girl across.

Bloke in a Corsa - Ahmed ..

No one really could say his speed with any accuracy - reports of 50 mph and 60 mph . ...

He did stop after he hit Ellesse.

He drove off. Got a pal to give a false alibi and guilt got the better of him some 11 days later when he confessed all.

So what happened then?

Ahmed is remanded in custody awaiting trial for Death by Dangerous and Leaving Scene of an Accident.

He spent 6 months in custody and was well behaved throughout. He expressed remorse at his trial. He apologised to the Gore family who reportedly accept no jail term will return Ellesse to them.

Yeah - we know - Ferdl was also unique and my Wildy :neko: wife - I could not envisage my life without her. I thank my God daily for her survival to be honest.

Well per the Bolton headlines of yesterday ..

Ahmed (18) received a two year ban. (I'd be happier if he had to take an extended test in reality. Young lad. I think of his parents and their worries too. I do not think I want him to become a "Howarth" type - and I would like to think he can learn and build his character from this.)

He received 12 months for killing the child and three months for running from the scene. Sentence served in Young Offenders Institution.

He will be free in 6 weeks because of the remand system and his exemplary behaviour throughout. Perhaps Judge Morris read it right? I do hope so for Ahmed and for Ellesse Gore.

Quite interestingly the Judge said

B.E.N as reported by Ed Chadwick - front page scoop wrote:

I take the driver's age, previous good character and his panic at what he did into consideration.

This case does come low on criminal culpability. The threshold of dangerous to which the accused has pleaded guilty is passed only by a narrow margin and the speed was not gross in real terms.

Other drivers though - had no problems in seeing these children and for some reason your attention was not focussed on the road ahead

You struck Ellesse Gore - a little girl aged 9 years.

It is very evident that the impact was heavy as your car did swerve violently per eye-witness accounts

You knew you had hit someone. You should have stopped. You did not.

His defence claimed the young 18 year old simply panicked - could not face anyone .. look them in the eye.. was so ashamed - tormented by what he had done.

Yes.. I understand this. We keep receiving flowers and gifts from the widow of the man who nearly ended my wife's life. Wildy was brave enough to make a post on the Road peace forum about this.

So my view?

To the Gore family if you ever hit on this site - I well understand the pain, the grief and the desire for revenge.

Please focus on Ellesse. Celebrate her life. Remember her.

Let go of hate. It festers. I've been there... my wife was in a coma for weeks. I nearly lost her. I almost lost the plot of reason at the time.

Let it go. It does not take anything away from the memory of your child - who looks very much like one of my own at that age.

The young lad will serve the same life sentence of memory and for him - continued guilt if I read this tale correctly.

Should he serve longer? I really do not know. His standard of driving was plain daft and for that alone maybe he should serve more time.

But if the remorse and guilt are genuine.. lifetime of torture and perhaps nothing worse than self-hate.

Maybe the Judge saw this ... I'd like to think so.

Tabloids picked up on this story today. The local MPs are urging the family to appeal against the sentence.

From the report the young man was scared and went into denial...
18 years - as father of children of similar ages... I can understand this.

But even so - 12 months for colliding with this child and 3 months for leaving the scene - reduced by his waiting time and remissions does seem rather low.

A souped up Corsa.. big alloys .. pump up the volume stereo ...tinted glass.. ..

Young drivers... If only we can find a way of getting the message across to them that it's cooler to COAST

However, I do not think it so much the "leniency" of the sentence as much as the judge's comment about this being a "low scale crime" which has caused upset to the girl's mother and grnadmother.

I somehow think the majority of drivers - including the witnesses were in excess of 40 mph if truth be known. The tabloids say this road was 40 mph and he was driving at 60 mph.

The Bolton paper which carried the story from the outset always reported a 40 mph limit and reported speeds of between 50 and 60 mph variable - but that the eyewitnesses - including other drivers - were just not sure.

One thing really stands out:

Inattention is a big killer, particularly with new drivers. They just don't realise that something, or someone, can appear in the road ahead within mere seconds - until it does happen.

How many more people have to die before they start drumming this fact into new drivers, instead of the mindless, "stick to the limit and you'll be OK"

It's really sickening that people's lives continue to be sacrificed at the altar of political correctness and revenue gathering.

That young guy is just as much a victim of the system as the girl he hit.

A nine-year-old child is dead and her family torn apart because she was an inattentive pedestrian (I presume - many kids seem to think that cars must stop for them if they walk out into the road...) and a young man carries the burden of another human being's death for the rest of his life due to his lack of attention and experience.
The predominant judicial focus is on the speed, which sets the ultimate criteria for the severity of the sentence...
This underlines the stupidity of the premise that 'speed kills' - under the circumstances, she would probably have lost her life if he had been doing 30; neither was looking for the other.

I hope that, in time, he will learn to live with this. I fear that he may not... :(
