As said in another thread - each time the daily road deaths appear in any newspaper .. ist always some hit und run incident by someone not legal in first place..

I do fail to see how investing in speed cams resolve this. Surely the answer lie in having policemen out there?

This appear in today's "Express"

Woman was given a £50 fine und 6 month driving ban after she leave father aged 38 for dead. He received head injuries und whilst he did survive.. he has no memory of wife und three children und ist also paralysed. He cannot recognise his family und each visit .. he never recall seeing them before

The woman has never apologised for knocking him down und family feel they live their lives in sort of limbo.

The woman admitted careless driving, failing to stop und not even having a valid driving licence when she appear in court.

The victim was crossing the road und the driver say she was shocked when "something hit her windscreen"

The woman had passengers in car who were her witnesses. These people say the victim appear from nowhere und she would never have been able to stop in time.

Another witness says the victim "smelled strongly of drink which perhaps did not help matters.

RoSPA Kevin Clinton say

Quote:

The case shows the devastating effect that a lack of concentration, observation, attention und anticipation can have.

:yesyes: Und you could have gone full monty with the COAST there.

As things stand - sentences for careless drivers are very minor even if death results This will change with the introduction of the new law which carry jail term for causing death through careless driving which ist introduced later this year

This ist where we have a slight problem. The woman was not careless - she was ILLEGAL und SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DRIVING!

If person ist involved in accident which has fatal consequences - then ist not as simple as "revenge lock up" - the circumstances have to be fully examined und the character of person addressed as well. We have to have full equity, justice und give fair und useful help to all so traumatised by tragedy.

If person ist like this one - deliberately driving when she should not be - breaking a lot of other laws und her licence was revoked on MEDICAL GROUNDS too (a subject on which I can get unreasonably lathered up over for reasons known to all on this site und PH) - then ist another matter und such drivers should rightly be locked up. :furious:

The new law wouldn't have affected this case, since death did not result.

What would have affected this case is if they'd applied the existing law of failing to stop after an accident which can carry a prison sentence if it's appropriate.

How they can consider a 6 month ban an adequate punishment for this woman who already has no licence anyway is staggering. She has been punished less than someone who does 35 a 30 safely: that person would have a licence to get the points on.

Still, if the person run over was drunk it does suggest she may not have been at fault. But in that case wouldn't it be better just to not prosecute, instead of giving joke sentences that send the wrong message?
