The van came to my attention when it cruised past me while I was doing 65 in lane 2 of the M6 northbound on Friday morning.
Later, as I was able to pass the vehicle in front of me, I got up to an indicated 70 mph, only to find I was still being left behind.
Soon however, the driver was baulked in lane 2 by a slower vehicle, and a couple of reps in lane 3 stranded him for a while, enabling me to catch up slowly.
When he did not immediately follow them into lane 3, I started to pass - cautiously, since he was obviously in a hurry and I suspected he would rather be off in lane 3. Sure enough, he emerged in front of me with only the merest hint of the indicator - and I saw the Honda Jaz which he had been following was only a couple of armlengths in front of where he had been positioned!!
I urged my wife to phone it in, as his driving was obviously well below standard, and had the above picture taken as a record of his passage in lane 3. However, we quickly encountered more traffic as we passed Penrith, which slowed everyone for a while. But by Southwaite Services, he was back up to speed, but passing a large artic. in lane 1 he was taken by surprise, when the artic lurched in the strong crosswind, and swerved past the artic, with just inches to spare.
My father-in-law who was a passenger with us, was of a nervous dispostition, so I slowed to an indicated 68 and let the Schott lorry slip ahead - only for him to suddenly anchor on as we approached Junction 43 - the reason? A police car on the bridge!
Needless to say, he returned to lane 2, and we did not see him again - presumably he turned off to go to Darlington!
