CAMPAIGNERS fighting the creation of a toll motorway alongside the M6 through Mid Cheshire say they are optimistic they can win their battle.

Dozens of people attended a public meeting last week to hear more about the Govern-ment's plans to expand the congested motorway.

They believe the Government is likely to press on with plans to build a new road, the M6 Expressway, rather than improving the existing motorway.

Cheshire Friends of the Earth spokeswoman Tania Sayer said: 'I think the Government will probably go for the expressway but, with a good, solid argument, I think we can win.' She said the meeting at Congleton had been a success, with about 50 people present to hear speakers outline the plans to expand the road.

'We find the strength of feeling expressed at the meeting very encouraging and that some who attended are planning to set up a group to campaign against this road-building lunacy is great news,' she said.

'It is going to be a long and difficult campaign to persuade the Department of Transport to adopt the alternative sustainable approach to the transportation of people and goods. However, it is a campaign that must be fought, and for the sake of the sustainable future we all want, it must be won.'

I thought this had died a death?

Traitorblair: Are you sure that you have the correct road? They were going to built an addition Birmingham Relief Road between M5 at about J4 up to M6/M54 around the west side to take as much traffic as possible away from the M5/M6 junction mess. That one was cancelled and traffic is still as bad as ever in that area.
