Wildy has posted to PH and I gather the Parrot of Doom also mentioned it over there ages ago.

Anyway this in e-mail from my sister

Ahh! The wimmin in the family

my cheeky kid sister informing me about the M60 Gatso and a speed limit wrote:

Ted - know now what you mean about your father-in-law as a passenger! He's much worse than Joe, Charles, Harry and Angela. It was like being on a driving test all the time. Every so often - he'd ask what the speed limit was and then ask how I knew and when did I see the lolly!

After two days of this I insured my car for him to drive instead! Have to say he is rather cool for his age! Took him to Wales and some NT places around here . He did most of the driving and guess what - I can now do a heel and toe properly! He taught me! Hopefully Wildy will rescue me this weekend!

Anyway - he was scathing about some road signs - the lack of them! When we drove on the Carrington Spur he was amazed to find they changed the limit from NSL to 50 mph! He was even more amused by M60 Gatso before J8.

As you know - was very visible and they had the road marks.

They have now moved the cam behind the crash barrier and removed the line markings. Perhaps they were not making any cash from it!

As you go up the to the Spur.. they placed twin lollies at the entrance to the roundabout now - but that was only after speaking to Herr von No Nonsense from Switzerland after the trip to the Trafford Centre where he bought his wife something sweet!

As you go around - you get the tempo twins for 40 mph to M60 slip roads but when you cross the M60 to take the A6144 down to Carrington, Dunham, Lymm etc - there is no lolly there. There is one for traffic coming to the junction from the A56 though.

As you go down the A6144 there are 50 mph repeaters but no red oblong informing that the limit has in fact changed and even more annoying ... the cam van was illegally parked in the lay-by by the SOS phone.

Cue Herr von No Nonsense as my passenger on that occasion hitting the mobile phone to complain again and his wife sighing in the back.... I see where Wildy gets it from now!

So .. A6144 - now :50: :loco:

As for the tempo Gatso and absence of white lines.. that's a bit "nowty"

Ah the Carrington Spur is now 50mph? I used to enjoy being able to legally do 70mph on a single carriageway road on the rare occasion there wasn't a perplexed motorist in front doing 40mph.

The camera van was parked in the SOS lay-by? :yikes: For those unfamiliar its clearly not a normal lay-by as its on a 'motorway' and has signs up "For Emergency Use Only" What next, scameras on the hard shoulder of the M6?!

Last week I was able to assist in the preservation of the A6144(M) sign for posterity :D

Very naughty putting scam vans in the emergency laybys, though :x

It's no longer a motorway anymore? Some people have to spoil all the fun.

Worse than me and me bruvs and sister? :rotfl: Steady on J!

 Well - I sometimes forget ... and ask the odd questions. Though I do admit Uncle does note if you have not noted or have a COASTal slip!

As she's a teacher - and she lurks on here   Shall have some fun!

He'll be well chuffed to read that. (He's 76)

He's rather good at this skill .. admittedly! 8-) Family are a bit odd by Swiss standards. This is the country which refuses motor sport on its patch. Their motor sports "stars" train over the border - and the Swiss riff raff to whom I am related as direct cousin to one set and "once removed one" from the other mob - as most on here are aware are very enthusiastic about their wheels.

Now that is very naughty and the sort of thing which does them no favours in the eyes of the most motorists and general public.

As this road feeds directly to the M60 - I assume it's still "verboten" to cyclists! :yikes:

Have mental visions now of some cyclists new to the area following the road and ending up in danger as a result. :yikes:

I can imagine... :rotfl: Like your description of the old boy!

Aye - tis a shame. It's a nice safe road too.

I am sure the stretch past the first lights used to be 60 mph and is now 40 mph - as is that road leading to Trafford Hospital and Urmston. The latter - could understand as it's 30 mph as you get to sharp bend which leads to the train station there. (Or have I got the wrong road? Ages since I worked with GMP... )

Surely the cameras must be out of operation now if they have removed the secondary check markings? I drove the stretch recently and both sides have been altered. I thought Gatso's needed to have both to be type approved?

Yes, the road between the end of the A6144(M) and Carrington Village used to be NSL, now 40 with Gatsos, likewise the road across from Carrington to Flixton (which I think is the one you mean).

I've updated my webpage on the now former motorway:

http://www.speedlimit.org.uk/gallery_a6144m.html

Incidentally, I was one of four people to lodge a formal objection to the speed limit cut. I have often driven along there at 70 and see no reason whatsoever why when motorway status was removed it could not have been made NSL.
