Just read this story:
http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/10/1036.asp

It appears that cameras increase accidents according to an independant audit. And reports official corruption in skewing the results.

Isn't it a good job that this could never happen in England (ahem!)

To help explain discrepancies in the police data, the auditor sought accident claim numbers from Manitoba Public Insurance. The information provided for the twelve selected camera intersections paints a significantly different picture from the police version, and unlike the Winnipeg Police Service, there is no conflict of interest providing an incentive to skew the numbers in either direction.

"The information received is useful because it came from an independent source," the audit stated.

Of course they dont want the truth out...
Imagine:
Speed Cameras fail to reduce accidents. "2nd Hand GATSO for sale - £28,000!"
Wouldn't be many takers!

I haven't had time to more than skim read the detailed PDF, but I am always wary when a couple of years (i.e. high selectivity) are used to draw conclusions - in either direction. The headline figures here are just as likely to be susceptible to RTTM distortion as the figures used to prove they are working.

However, on the plus side, it would appear that despite the publicity creating an increase in public support for the cameras, the accidents and injuries are definitely going up. Perhaps worth a PR after you have read it properly Paul?

It's old news I'm afraid. I was aware of it when it first came out, but didn't issue a PR. I can't remember why not. The best thing now is to use it as supporting information for a newsworthy PR. I'll keep my eyes open for an opportunity.
