A tragic accident.

EU Regs have gone some way to confront this type of accident by requiring the fitment of overhead front viewing mirrors to new vehicles but, quite honestly, on the few occasions that I have driven one, I've noticed that the mirror is sited outside of my perpheral vision. It only really becomes noticeable where there is a discontinuous line to the nearside, whereupon it becomes a distraction.

Human nature being what it is. When walking between two vehicles, the average pedestrian will pick a point mid-way between the vehicles (irrespective of relative size). Leaving a larger gap in such circumstances serves to minimise the danger, but also provides for the selfish driver of a smaller vehicle to push in inappropriately.

Many years ago, I remember an instance of a flat bed artic turning left at a junction. Residential streets so the speed was low. A pedestrian at the kerbside either stumbled or fell against the trailer. He then fell back with a ruptured aorta. Dead. The lorry driver didn't have clue as to what had happened.

Lorry drivers are also targetted by the 'mentally unstable' It is not unheard of, when in traffic, for the odd person to kneel down and put their head under the trailer wheels awaiting the vehicle moving off.

Train drivers get, and deserve, sympathy for some of the incidents that they are confronted with, but it is often forgotten that these same people often target the transport industry as way of ending their life.

Not that I am in any way suggesting that that be the case in the accident quoted at the commencement of this thread.

A while back, an inquest determined that a driver who had a head on with a truck on the A590, may have deliberately crossed over and hit the truck to end it all.
If that WAS the cause, then he was successful - at the truck drivers expense!
Maybe allowing voluntary euthanasia would solve some road and rail deaths!

It wouldn't 'on paper' because suicides and murders are already excluded from the figures.

Only when they know accidents fall into those categories.

I've seen suggestions that a number of car and particularly bike fatalities are suicides, but the relatives tend to hush it up and describe it as an accident.

They dont get any insurance if it is suicide - and if there is ANY doubt, inquests usually plump for any other option.
