Fylde MP Michael Jack, said: "It's concerning that this information has come to light at a time that an extensive network of cameras have been installed.

"These statistics counter the objectives.

"However, we need a much more detailed breakdown before a proper analysis is made on whether speed cameras are working."

Total deaths and serious injuries across the country fell, as did child casualties and pedestrian injuries but the number of cyclists killed rose.

In Lancashire, the number of serious injuries increased slightly from 960 in 2004 to 967 last year and slight injuries increased from 6,789 to 6,970.

Make an FOI request as to the CAUSES of accidents for specific roads over a 5 year period.

I got a map of the A591 in Cumbria, and causes by percentage, and tables of those involved by age/mode of transport etc.

3% of accidents caused by speeding in excess of the limit.
So assuming the cameras could prevent every single accident in which speed in exess of the posted limit was a cause, the result would hardly meet the 62% improvement claimed by the camera partnership on their website!

The map clearly showed that Bannerigg was a hotspot, and CSCP admit they cannot do anything about it.

Interesting - when compared to their 2004-5 'Operational Case' (highlights added):

Objectives

The Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety Project was officially launched on 21st November 2001. In terms of the national rollout, Lancashire was permitted to utilise the funding provision of the Vehicle Crime Bill from 1 October 2001.

The main aims of the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety are to:

Achieve the 2010 casualty reduction targets by 2005 (based on the 1994 98 baseline figure)

Any info on the 94-98 baseline? :stirthepot:

I have sent in a foi request for all of thier leafletsradio and tv ads(last week), . When I get a response I will let you all know.

It is interesting that thier site was mainly about drink driving and then in 2003/4 they wacked in a load of cameras and the deaths went up.

This approach has been endorsed by Attorney General ever since 1951. CPS Code
