Quote:
White Van Man is a 'proven danger'
By Sarah Womack, Social Affairs Correspondent
(Filed: 06/07/2006)

White Van Man, viewed by many motorists as the unruly road hog at the wheel of a light delivery vehicle, who heckles other drivers for their driving, has been scientifically proven to be more of a danger on the road.

Drivers of white vans overtake cyclists an average of four inches (10cm) closer than car drivers, according to new research.

Using a bicycle fitted with a video camera and an ultrasonic distance sensor, Ian Walker from the University of Bath's Department of Psychology, cycled more than 180 miles in Bristol and Salisbury over two months.

He was overtaken by about 2,500 vehicles, of which about 200 were white light good vehicles, which gave an average passing distance of just over 4ft 1in. Drivers of 200 black cars, used for comparison, allowed 4ft 5½in.

"At the kinds of speeds and distances that cyclists are overtaken on our city streets, reducing the gap between cyclist and vehicle can have life-threatening safety implications," said Mr Walker.

"Why white van drivers overtake closer is not clear; it could be a range of things, from social or personality factors, to the length and width of the vans, or even the stereotypical machismo of White Van Man.

"More than 2,000 cyclists are seriously injured in road accidents each year, and 100 die.

"If we understood what determines how close drivers get to cyclists as they overtake, we could do something to make collisions less likely, either in the way we construct our roads, or with advice to drivers about how they should drive and to cyclists about how they should ride."

The Highway Code advises drivers to give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as they would a car when overtaking.

Perhaps 'White Van Man' judges the width of his vehicle more accurately?

I bet that the range of variation of passing distance is smaller for WVM and I bet that the closest passers were car drivers.

The average means NOTHING - or at least it's a warning of the obvious bias in the 'research'.

A different headline, based on the same "research" might read...

White van drivers leave cyclists plenty of room
Research has shown that despite vans being considerably wider than cars, drivers still leave cyclists an average of over four feet of room when overtaking.

Why compare to black cars only ?

Was there really 1 in 12.5 vehicles a black car - I've just stood in my works car park and theres hardly any. Black cabs perhaps ? - possibly better trained ?

What about buses & lorries other coloured vans or cars -it all seems very cherry picked ?

Only one guy did the cycling and it would appear he knew precisely what he was investigating. Did he leave less room when he saw a white van approach or more room for other vehicles? Did he regularly inadvertently or deliberately ride up and down the road with white van hire centre where the road happens to be quite narrow ?

Was TV / Radio / Newspaper reporting always this bad or is it a consequence that few people these days have much understanding of maths and statistics due to dodgy pseudo statistical driven government interference in schools?

Thats what I thought JT, his van is bloomin wider than a car and 4 inches (measure it out with your fingers) is nothing.
This study falls neatly into the category of someone who obviously had nothing better to do with his time.

Drivers of 200 black cars----Someone mentioned a nearby van hire place - was there also a funeral parlor and a black car hire firm ( or a taxi firm using black private hire cars )??

Whole set of data looks half baked , -- what was also missing was when WVM started to pull out - and pull in was this earlier or later than black car man ,and did WVM pass at higher or lower speeds than black car man.

AND now , found on line , can't remember where --a document published by Network rail for the guidance of track workers ---setting out the distances to be safe when passed by a train ( lot , lot bigger than WVM) ----"aT SPEEDS UP TO 100 MPH - SAFE CLEARANCE IS 4 FOOT (1.25M)"

Hands up - passed on a bike at 4ft by WVM at 30/40 or on foot by a train at up to 100mph - which one would you choose ????
