Of late I have noticed police cars (both traffic cars and beat cars) parked just off the road on the grass verge, most commonly at the entrance/exit to roundabouts, and every time I drive past, the officer is always looking down at his dashboard. And it always happens at night.

What is he looking at?

If it's speed detection, then radar/laser guns won't work with the windows done up and vascar needs to be operated by the officer actually looking at the moving vehicle.

My only other theory is automatic number plate recognition (ANPR). Or have I got it completely wrong?:?

Is there a camera in view? My first thought was a 12 volt doughnut warmer

It's at night nrc?

Are you sure he's looking at dashboard as opposed to head on chest for a little Image snooze? (This is of course sleeping off Ernest's doughnut intake suggestion)

Ahh it's making more and more sense! :D

there are a few roundabouts in cov they like to hang out at... parked on the pavement with a camera looking out the back at oncoming traffic... with another car pulling cars off the roundabout and a raft of bikers for those who dont stop.

i'm hoping its mobiles & seatbelts rather than anpr.

ED - which ones - as i don't go there often at night - but it's nice to be forewarned, and BTW - the layby before the RICOH (late at night) has been known to hold various strange suspect police vehicles.

ANPR probably, sitting at a roundabout they will get a steady stream of traffic going slow enough for the equipment to be able to pick it up.

I saw quite a couple doing it in the Northants area, one was parked on a concrete section off the edge, another on an unfinished exit.

If he's sat in the car looking down, it's probably doughnuts and coffee...
