Locally there is a unction where two one-way single lane roads merge into a one-way two lane road. for the first 100 yards or so there is a thick (12" wide ) solid white line. I have always understood that this line should notbe crossed, and indeed most traffic does not change lanes until after the solid white line. I can't find a reference to this particular marking in the highway code. There are other cases where similar lines are used, for example marking the edges of bus lanes and multi-occupancy lanes. How does the law apply to these? Can they be crossed at all ? when necessary? in an emergency ? When the bus lane is not in operation ?

The only single solid lines I can think of are along the edge of the road.

Could be your council making things up, they like to do that.

There is a place near here with a line in the same situation as you described, I'll have to check the lines part of the TSRGD to see if it is actually in there. But this is Poole, they don't follow the regulations here, much easier to make it all up.

Bus lane lines are an oddity if the bus lane is not in operation I think you're allowed to cross them...!

Everything is excempt in an emergency. :)

yup we have that near here (nuneaton).... maybe same place.

two lanes coming head on turn left/right to be paralell.

seems to be 50:50 who take note of the solid white line and those who don't.

personally i think it's good as its a bit hairy making the turn and keeping an eye on the traffic you're about to merge with.

then again there's a similar scenario on the stratford one way system with a few yards of kerb & then free for all!

Rule 119:

Quote:

You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane maked by a solid white line during its perriod of operation.

Do NOT drive or park in a cyclel lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable.

You MUST NOT park in any cycle lan whilst waiting restrictions apply

Law RRA s 5&8

This also applies to bus and tram lanes (Rule 120.

See also Rule 215

As for the solid white as described. Rule 107/108 would apply in that if the solid white line is nearest to you means you must not straddle or cross

Highway Code wrote:

unless it is safeand you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road.

You may straddle or cross to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a bicycle, horse, maintenance vehicle providing they are travelling at 10 mph or less

Thus you are correct
