Goodness sake. On the M2 into Belfast tonight I hit a 50 limit, which to me means just drive normally. Getting closer into town (Duncrue for those locals) the speed limit dropped to 40, and we were down to 3 lanes, compared to the usual 5. Getting even closer to Whitla street the limit dropped to 20, yes, 20, and we were down to one lane. Was the 20 really necessary? I slowed right down, it seemed somewhat silly doing 20 in a full sized motorway lane, and I got tailgated for doing so, but I didn't want to run the risk of getting nabbed by plod for doing more. Then all of a sudden back up to 50... Just before we had to go off the motorway because it was closed, and right back to 30... What a waste...

Goodness - 20 mph? Never come across that before at roadworks... Were there a lot of heavy diggers and steamrollers? Perhaps they should have extended the closure of the stretch.

Um, it was 5 lanes of motorway down to 1... I'm guessing that was the reasoning, but I was going along at about 12.30, so I don't know... I'm wondering why they didn't open the hard shoulder as an extra lane, in my opinion is was silly to reduce the motorway to a single running lane at 20mph, they would have been better killing the speed to about 40, and opening the hard shoulder, but they probably have their reasons. As far as I could see there were basically no heavy machines or anything like that...
