Ministers reject calls for new hikes in air travel taxes as their efforts to cut transport pollution come under fire.

Raising air travel taxes would only hit poorer people, said ministers as MPs accused them of failing to stop transport that fuels global warming.

So why do they hike the taxes on road transport, which hits the poorest even harder?

It seems our goverment has only two soultions to problems with the country.

1- Ban it and do nothing.
2- Tax it and do nothing.

Or it seems they don't like to raise taxes for their dear friends in the big business industries.

Just the poor man on the street whose only powers rest in one vote every four years or risk imprisonment for demonstrating.

But of course! Tax that which you cant do without and leave the "Optional Extras" unscathed to leave the Sheeple thinking the benificent government has done them a favour

I havn't flown *over water* since I was six months old! Nor do I intend too unless I am emigrating (Which is a growing possibility! )

Trouble is where too? Maybe I should Auction myself on E-bay! (Intrests in Nuclear engineering, NPR rocket propulsion, ETC ETC Might even get a few offers :D  )

If this were an environmental tax then the money would go directly into carbon offset programs.

The fact is that tax is tax. Nothing more nothing less.

Its about squeezing the last penny out of us and they think that if they hang a "green" label on it we will gladly pay.

What bollocks. The amount of tax we pay is obscene.

We already pay airport tax (a recent invention) which accounts for a significant part of the cost so when this was introduced did the demand for air travel drop.......errrrrrrrrr no!

Thought it was only me that had seen that it was some committee or other on about reducing /enforcing motorway limits & hitting air travel, rather than the "Government" - whilst the government was against it ( or so they said ) - evening news on Central ( and some others on BBC) the impression given was that this was official policy.
Indeed it was hard to find any source giving out who actually said what.

Look This works the same way as planning applications.

<Property developer> (Substitute name) proposes 25,000 house development in SSI, of course everybody objects so they scale "down" to, say, 5000!

Ebverybody breathes sigh of relief and they get away with it every time!

In Military terms it is similar to "Reconasence by sortie"

This is a "Testing the water" exercise! It will not be pursued in its current format! A slightlly more subdued version will likley be sneaked in over the next few years though (Unless there is a *radical* change in government! )

Professor Emeritus from London Uni - enviro-eco- geogaphy? You'sd think he'd agree...

Nope.

100% pro the argument against silly VED and punitive taxation as this hammers the middle classes on modest to below average income - whilst the super rich simply shrug it off. They can afford it and can keep it all.

Interestlingly he also pointed out that you might as well proverbially "fart in a strong hurricane wind " for all the good it will do. After all - UK doing it alone is not going to impact. All it does is punish its citizens. As he says - all countires have to agree not to pollute and we have fat chance of that occurring. UK savings would not equate to more than the aforementioned fart in a hurricane.

Economy would be hit with a Katrina Hurricane force of destruction as well.

He did remark that since aviation was the highest polluter and receives tax brakes as an industry - then obviously you hit this first.. assess the overall impact and then gradually introduce other greeny alternatives. You cannot impose VED of £900 for a Mini.. £1200 for cars currently at £150 VED and £2000 for the SUVs without providing cheap - and I mean cheap and comfortable and timely public transport alternatives. Not everyone wants to or can ride a bicycle or horse to work. Employers recruite nearest or provide a relocation package. After all - local person may not be highest qualified candidate - but could be most productive as "less knackered by a traffic jam" ;)

Make hotels and hols cheaper in UK as well. Weather not really the issue. UK resorts are not as cheap as Europe overall.

Lot of ways we can help ourselves.. but then these do not milk someone.

For record - financial whizz on radio 4 today estimated that the motoring industry already contributes £50 BILLION of which only £6 BILLION is spent on improving roads and standards. (Peer reviewed LSE Prof on "You & Yours"  )

So ... motorists contribute heck of a lot to ecomomy and public purses. More so than non-motorists.

I wonder who they will fleece once we all jostle around and cut each other up in that place called "cyclonightmaryland" Rose tinted glasses wither eventually

Or they could just shove more sulphur into air fuel.

This would dump suphates high into the atmosphere were they will contribute to the "global dimming" effect, blocking out some sunlight and lowering temperatures, counterbalancing any global warming that might be going on thanks to increased carbon emissions or other reasons.

The hardcore left wing will have a fit at the idea, but those who are a bit more open minded would eventually have to admit that it'll keep the climate more stable and cool things down a bit.

Would have to be a worldwide thing though.
