Satellites on speeders

By GEORGE PASCOE-WATSON
Political Editor

SPEEDING bikers are to have their throttles shut down by SATELLITE, it was revealed last night.

But motorcycle experts have condemned the spy-in-the-sky move as “lethally dangerous”.

Riders breaking the speed limit will receive two warnings before their throttle is cut, leaving them without power.

Roads minister Stephen Ladyman — a former boy racer — will endorse the controversial plan today.

But one expert who trialled the Intelligent Speed Adaptation bike for the government, warned: “This will have profoundly dangerous consequences.”

Bikers’ engines will be adapted to carry a spy-in-the-sky control.

Those who speed will alert satellites, which will send back a warning to the rider.

A beep will sound in the helmet before the saddle starts to shake violently.

Those who ignore the warnings will have their throttle gradually shut as they ride.

Ministers are also planning to use the technology in cars.

The move is certain to be condemned by drivers’ groups and even motoring organisations.

Experts say it is vital drivers can call on extra power to get OUT of a dangerous situation and the plan may cost lives.

The Transport Department last night insisted Mr Ladyman is unlikely to make the ISA bike compulsory.

=======================

This is the story behind the speed limit review. I've been working on it in secret with a Sunday newspaper, but it seems The Sun got there first.

That is the most rediculous and frightening thing I've heard in a long time. Assuming that the technology is brought in though, I take it that it will only be fitted to new bikes as it would cost far too much to retro-fit to older machines. That and anything without electronic ignition and fuel injection won't be able to be modified.

If this is brought in it will completely destroy the new bike market and will be the final nail in the coffin for the British biking industry as a whole. And of course, speeding bikers kill SOOO many people, don't they?! Demonisation much?!

Safe Speed issued the following PR at 09:08 this morning:

PR342: Satellite control makes zombie drivers

news: for immediate release

The real reason for the recently announced speed limit review is the intention
to introduce satellite control of vehicle speeds, it emerged today.

So called 'Intelligent Speed Adaptation' (ISA) is a black box installed in a
vehicle that holds a map of all speed limits, determines your position from
satellite signals and adjust the throttle - or even applies the brakes - to
prevent your vehicle from exceeding the speed limit.

The system is being developed at Leeds University, who are years behind in
terms of publishing the results of recent trials. They have spent millions of
pounds of Department for Transport money and evaluating their own results. No
risk of bias there then.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign
(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "I'm amazed to hear of a second deadly mistake by
Department for Transport within as many days. Initial trials from Leeds clearly
demonstrated the dangers of the system as drivers paid less attention,
tailgated more and pulled into smaller gaps."

"Anyone who understand safe driving will know that safety depends on drivers
being fully engaged in the task. With ISA ordinary motorists will turn into
zombies with their foot planted to the floor, trusting the satellite to control
their speed. They will not be as ready to deal road hazards. They will behave
like zombies."

"Department for Transport policies have failed and now they want to do much
much more of the same. Safe Speed estimates that 8,000 have already died of
'bad policy' on British roads, because DfT policies have made drivers worse and
caused a loss of trend in the fatal accident rate. Who is going to stop them
before it's too late?"

"Since the introduction of HGV speed limiters, deaths amongst HGV drivers have
risen alarmingly."

"Satellite speed control is anything but intelligent. Remember there is no such
thing as a safe zombie."

And it would be so easy to disable anyway. That, or buy a foreign registered & insured bike and use that in the UK.

Uncharacteristically sensationalistic story from the most trustworthy newspaper in the world. I'm surprised they didn't get the copy from MCN.

Yes... But... Even a blind squirrel finds the occasional nut.

So every motorbike will have a radio transmitter capable of reaching a satellite?

Maybe they are hoping to get ladies to vote for this....

Satellite control isn't going to happen.

Could be dangerous, it might encourage them to go faster.

Many motorcyclists are killed or seriously injured in bends because they panic and brake causing the bike to sit up and run wide. Even relatively gradual braking in bends has an adverse effect on the suspension and steering characteristics. The rider must have full control of his vehicle at all times. If the bike starts to roll off the power becasue the rider has entered a 40mph limit on the approach to a bend he could easily find himself battling for control or worse

As an advanced instructor I certainly would not be prepared to train anyone on a bike fitted with such a dangerous modification.

Speed limiters are not a good way to save lives - we only have to look at the number of fatal accidents involving moped riders. Moped are restricted to 30mph and are often cut up or inconvenienced because of there inability to travel at an appropriate speed for the conditions.
