According to the BBC, there have been 59 fatalities on Cumbria's roads this year, up from 45 last year.
They also say we have the highest number of fatals per head of population - a record the CSCP will not be keen to own up to!
I wonder how the statistician and the propaganda officer are going to spin this one into a successful year? :x

Here's how Steve Callaghan reported the stats in 2004 - IN MAY!!
Quote:
Dear All
I am the Safety CAmera Manager for Cumbria and have recently posted this on my Website Discussion Forum:

******************************
Well I never.

Just done a quick Calculation and fatals are down 26% for the first third of the year compared with 2003. Isn't that marvellous.

And Serious Injuries down 44% compared to 2003

KSI's down 42% compared to 2003

For once I have to agree with our friend Mr Smith, KSI's, in particular SI's are doing strange things, but this sort of strange I can handle!

Perhaps I better call the BBC
******************************
Now I have heard a lot of nonsense spoken about how speed cameras are making the situation regarding accidents worse. Mainly from folk who are sitting at their keyboard and typing whimsical ideas about safety om the road. Well up in Cumbria the major (even step)downward change in killed and serious injuries has occured just after the safety camera partnership started to operate speed cameras in the safety system.
This has been a partnership with the Council, The Highways Agency, The Magistrates Courts Service and Cumbria Constabulary.
The speed enforcement function is very much a pertnership between the Police and the Camera Team, supported by our other partners.
We are open and we welcome feedback and discourse with the public.
Every one of our detractors has been issued with a speeding ticket.
There is a mixture of those with and without tickets among our supporters.
We are looking to be making quite a difference here in Cumbria and it proves those postulating deskbound non-practitioners are just not right. I'm willing to bet most have speeding tickets.
Check out our figures on www.cumbriasafetycameras.org they look nothing like what has been proposed by your man from the RAC desk.

Happy and Safe Motoring to all

Whatever happened to looking at figures for one year in isolation?

What utter utter nonsense!

Am I the exception? Is there anyone else out there with a clean licence, and yet would count themselves as an SCP 'detractor'?

Perhaps I am reading it wrong, is issuing speeding tickets how the punish their detractors?

Nope. Most of us have never had a speed camera ticket. Me included.

There's a poll (not quite the same question): http://www.safespeed.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6414

I haven't ever had a scamera ticket either - in Cumbria or anywhere else for that matter!

Sorry Steve!

I guess that was just another (ahem!) "terminological inexactitude" then

Oh how I miss the old CSCP forum! -Don't suppose there's any chance of it being resurected any time soon though!

I have a clean license. When I tell people I do not like speed cameras their first reaction is to look at me in patronising way and say “does someone have points on their license?” :nono: To which I gleefully reply "no clean as whistle! "

WOW! I never expected to see a figure as high as 84% myself to be honest!

Given that maybe 90% of people on this site are 'detractors' I'd say his figures are wildly innaccurate. I guess thats hardly a surprise eh?

Isn't there some accuracy challenge we can issue on this statement; it plainly helps their case to have Joe Blow believeing that the only people who don't like cameras are those they have pinged. I know lying to the public to further your own agenda is considered a valid political tool these days, but whatever happened to accountability?!

I'm pleased to say I still have a clean license and have never had any points. I did get stopped for a 'talking to' from BiB once and got a producer but I was going pretty quickly before the blue lights came on

:rotfl:

Sorry, Robin. I am not laughing at you. It's just that Steve Callaghan has a bit of history with us. When we caught him bang to rights telling lies on his forum (dozens of us witnessed it, even though the evidence has now been destroyed or at least put out of our sight) he threw his toys out the pram and tried to threaten SafeSpeed with legal repercussions.

The result was a fudge of huge proportions and exposed to all of us what a corrupt little shit Callaghan and his cronies are....

Hmm, I think he may be receiving an email from a concerned citizen in the not too distant future, cc'd to the press...

Ernest, where did the quote in your post originate?

Given that some of us are specifically known by name (eg E Marsh esq) and our real names are known to others, does this make Callaghan's comments libellous?

As Cumbria Police have previously considered libel to be a police matter  should a complaint be made about Callaghan's comments?

It's possible - but it's rather old news now. Those comments were made in 2004. Also they may now be hard to verify.

Here is the link to the BBC post made in 2004:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/F?thread=349174

As Paul said, it's old news - much more water under the bridge since then!

Perhaps you should email him at his CSCP lair? On second thoughts, perhaps not - he has a lot on his plate at the moment, trying to dream up some spin to cover up his lack of success in reducing fatal accidents.

http://www.cumbriasafetycameras.org/index.php?contacts

Those of you who dont know his style might like to read the exchanges at the bottom of this BBC item on the LTI 20/20. You should start at the bottom and work your way up to match chronological order, oh and you will see some familiar names in there!

Saw the original quote there Ernest, thanks!

Am quite tickled that it was Steve Callaghan's own capitalisation that spelt out SCAM from his job title!

Am also chuffed that this posting is preserved on a third party site for reference!

I'm sure they'll weasel out of it by quoting the KSI stats rather than the deaths separately, which will "prove" that cameras cut KSI's by 15% or something.
