There are plans afoot to plans to dramatically reduce the speed limit on
the stretch of the A610 to the west of J26 of the M1. If you use this stretch of road then read on...!

Follow link.... http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/home/ ... ssouth.htm and look for the A610

Kimberley/Eastwood Bypass, Nuthall to Giltbrook. See map ref:

huge link hidden by moderator

The road is currently a NSL road with no street lighting or crash barrier in
the centre.I safely drive on this stretch of road at speeds of up to 70mph
to and from work each day. The measures propose would criminalise
myself and other drivers for travelling at a safe speed under these
conditions and no doubt will benefit the 'Safety' camera partnership's
coffers over the long term.

I am baffled with visibility being given as the reason against installing a
crash barrier in the central reservation on the more curved parts of the
road. A conventional crash barrier would help stop the headlights of cars
coming the other way dazzling you when it's dark.

Alternatively there are the wire type crash barriers (the ones with the
steel cables in tension) that would improve visability around thebends.
Not that I feel that the visibility would be that badly reduced anyway.

Also I fail to understand why there are no plans to install adequate street
lighting on the stretch - especially considering the adjoining safer NSL
stretch further west has been so treated. It's a black hole in the dark!

One if the risks heading towards M1 J26 on the road is
queuing traffic by the motorway - why not have an illuminated
signrunning off sensors to alert drivers to this together with an advisory
(or variable) speed limit when the traffic is bad.

Sadly the solution offered is cheap - a shame considering how much we
users pay into the system and the roads!

And regarding the 8 deaths reported on this stretch of road in the last 6
years - I know 2 of these were children playing on the road (akin to go and play on the motorway, son!). There is a
high arch footbridge on the stretch that is known locally as the 'suicide
bridge', I also know of people doing U turns across the centre when
there's a queue approaching the M1.

Should this copme into force then I will switch to uing the old road that
this stretch was meant to relieve. This also avoids 2 nasty and often
congested roundabouts and the 30mph speed limit is appropriate for the
road so less chance of getting points if I let my speed drift!

I have emailed my views to highwayssouth.en@nottscc.gov.uk and so
have many people at my workplace who use the road. I have yet to
receive a response but perhaps people pressure may stand a chance.

I am now reading through your pages on the matter with great interest!

Here's the report on the A610 from to-nights Evening Post. (Nottm.)

MAKING ROAD STRETCH SAFER

12:00 - 03 November 2004

New speed limits are proposed for the dangerous A610 Kimberley to Eastwood bypass.

Notts County Council are planning to introduce a 60mph limit on the stretch of the road between Nuthall and Giltbrook.

A county council spokesman said the move was aimed at cutting the number of serious accidents on the road.

He said over the last six years there have been 69 accidents involving personal injury and eight deaths.

The scheme also involves a 50mph limit on the continuation of the A610/A6906 from the point of the end of the new 40mph limit.

The county spokesman said that in addition to the new speed limit they were considering putting up safety fencing on the central reservation.

The spokesman admitted it was a "drastic" move to reduce the speed limit on the road but emphasised the accident record warranted such action.

Note: No mention in the reports of cameras being installed, but this is obviously the aim of the scheme.
As a 'Revenue Raising' plot, it just cannot fail due to the layout of the road and the multi changing limits!

Couldn't agree more about the lack of adequate lighting, this probably was a causation factor in a number of the reported accidents.

Unfortunately it's going to be a 50 limit which goes down to a 40! 60/50 would not be so bad. I am based at and work from an office further along the A610 and I have yet to find anybody at work who agrees with this insane scheme.

It seems to be a case of 'stick a low limit on it - to hell with simple common sense engineering improvements'.

Needless to say there's been rather a lot of irate emails sent to Notts CC's highways dept!

50/40/50/60 Multi changing limits !
Perfect for the scam traps !

One can safely drive at 70 along this stretch, depending on conditions of course, but the new scheme is, as you say, 'insane' !

The 8 deaths mentioned.......would this figure include the taxi driver who was killed while assisting at the scene when a 'jumper' went off 'suicide bridge' and the two kids playing in the road ?

I'm still waiting for a reply to my email in which I asked them that question. Someone at work got a reply to their email (sent after mine) but got a 'We're right you're wrong' type of response.

I went into detail about the above and possible engineering measures they could have considered so I would appear to have stumped them!

One alarming thing was my colleague said that according to Notts Highways the cut-off date for protests was in September! They kept that one quiet didn't they!! Only heard about it from someone else at work through their local rag last week!!!

Par for the course, mate. They probably gave all the notice they had to - a few tatty bits of A4 in freezer bags by the roadside
and a tiny advert in the local papers. How are the Talivans going to do their best if loads of people know about it?

I only found out about it on wednesday 10/11/04 when it was first posted on here, the same night there was a brief snippet in my local rag, (the report was dated 3/11/04...'Much too late for the protest 'cut off' date' !) and I live less than 2 miles from the area, regularly use the road and can say there were no 'visible' signs of any changes to be made.
(Did see a few 'empty' freezer bags though  )

We are treated like mushrooms, ('kept in the dark, and fed plenty of sh1t') by the sneaky scammers !

The next 'easy pickings' road to be targetted will almost certainly be the A6002 Woodhouse Way/Bilborough Rd. parallel to M1, good, fast driving road, up/down hills, lots of good hiding places for the scams, yet another perfect 'Revenue Raiser' for the 'Roadside Robbery Machines' !
(Probably already been done, but not made public yet, gotta catch a few more before they tell us about the changes. )

Any one know why this thread has gone into 'Wide Screen' mode ?

Yep, 'cos your link further up the page is too long to wrap. Use something like SnipURL when you've got really long URLs to post and it'll give you a nice short one you can put here instead.

Phew...er... think I'll pass on that one Carl (not into the 'techy' side of this thing, yet :? )
Thanks anyway, good of you.

Think the link at the start of the thread was the problem.
Not trying to pass the blame, by the way :)

Thanks again.

I am sorry to drag this topic, back up.

But I live just around the corner and would just like to add, that I make it a point to use cruise control on this road to stick to the speed limit. I am generally a safe driver, but I don't neccessarily stick to the speed limit. I just feel the need to make a point.

Whilst I toodle along doing 40 MPH I am passed by Vans, Lorries, Semis and little old ladies in battered up old escorts.

I actually saw 2 people behind me have an argument (I think about me doing the speed limit). I just smiled and the passenger, stuck his fingers up at me. I think she was a bit scared to use the inside lane (I certainly would not have liked to be in that car, with her driving).

I generally do feel that all the county council have created a major road hazard, by imposing these speed limits. I would be very surprised if the casualty figures are produced.

BTW, If you head from the IKEA roundabout towards Nottingham, there is no sign saying 40 MPH (wasn't last time I looked), so most drivers floor it up the entrance to the A610 and are greeted by traffic doing 40 MPH.
