So... look ahead, if it looks like you'll get there at the same time as someone else then you slow down early so they get there first. Sometimes you can speed up to get there before them, but that doesn't tend to work as often.
I'll always try to make sure that I don't cause lorries to stop, I'm sure they use a lot of fuel getting back up to speed.

We've started recycling as much as possible - there's a collection bank at my supermarket so its not really any trouble. Its actually quite amazing just how little we actually throw in the bin now. I drive a 48mpg car and when the weather's OK, a 53mpg bike. Our house has loft insulation and I try to avoid eating beans.
Oh, and I'll believe that mankind is having an effect on climate when someone NOT commissioned by the government tells me so.
