Does anyone know if the cameras on top of traffic lights are speed/traffic light cameras? I was in a rush to work on Friday night and had some idiot right up my back, I was watching the road for a pedestrian crossing over, they got over safely but I ended up running a red light while the git who was sat on my arse stopped. The set of traffic lights I went through have cameras on top, the set before them also have them and there is a speed camera sign quite a way before you get to the first set. Does anyone know if these would be speed/traffic light cameras or are they likely to be the traffic flow monitoring cameras? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Try this link, and you will see pictures of most types of cameras in use.
You will know for certain within 14 days. Sorry I cannot be of more help, as I/we don't know the camera in question.

Take a deep breath and keep your fingers crossed, and while you wait, take a look around the site, and search for "In Gear"s COAST page - it should be a sticky somewhere! {Link please somebody!!}

Keep us posted how you get on.

Ernest, I looked at that site, and the installation they have illustrating a Traffic Light Camera looks suspiciously like a microwave sensor, placed atop traffic lights to sense approaching vehicles. All the red light cameras I have seen have been grey units, akin to Watchman or Peek boxes, located quite apart from the traffic lights themselves.

Thanks for that, the picture of the traffic light camera is exactly what I drove through, I have been told and seen pictures and info on other sites that say they are sensors for monitoring traffic flow but now that site has me worried! Have major problem if they are traffic light cameras as I already have 9 points :(

You will also find some high perched redspeed.monitron types at some lights. The good news ist that they very thoughtfully put line markings/sign up beforehand

Try not to worry too much for now. . Keep finger crossed but if you are on 9 point - please seek out IG posts as he say it better than I can

Go get ADI lesson.. seek out IAM .. buy RA device. There are ways to teach you how to spot hazards und by "hazard" I am not at all suggesting you look only for speed cam. n:roll:

You look for everything possible und risk assess each hazard, Evaluate each drive. Get into that habit.

It may just save your licence here  Make you a honed und toned hunky dory* driver. I try to anyway.

(I learn a new word today with hunky dory,*. I think I use it OK? I think a Chat topic  )

Lauren, I am fairly confident in saying that if it was a small box with a black lens, atop the lights, then it was indeed a traffic sensor, and not a camera. I cannot be 110%, but I am fairly certain.

Thanks for all your replies, the first set that does have the warning sign weren't on red when I went through but I'm pretty sure I was going over 30mph (!!), the second set are a way down the road from the first and don't have an additional warning sign so I can only hope they are traffc monitors and not speed/traffic light cameras! Thanks for all your help

How far over. You are allowed 10% + 2 as rule of thumb (but not set in stone) If 34 mph - you probably OK.

Go back to the spot. Look for a box. Look for some .. tell tale markings in the tarmac. You can spot, It a loopy triggering thing., I forget the word now. Dammit! I rolled this word out back in 2004 when talk of the pistondheads site too  . Look closely at the cams. Take a photo .. compare with any site showing a photo of the cams.

Warning sign for the first set can work for the second/third if in rapide succession.

Best of luck und let us know what happen.

Join in. It fun und all on here are gentlemen und ladies who take things seriously

:welcome: Lauren26.

I think you're talking about the things that look like CCTV on the top of the actual traffic light. In which case to the best of my knowledge: no they are not speed, or red light, cameras.

That would be the one!! I hope Lauren takes a look.

I have just a few COAST keyfobs already - I'd like a few more before I start taking orders, so people are not forced to wait.

The new ones are thicker - and probably not suited to gapping your spark plugs like the old ones.

I could get on quicker if I wasn't hindered with a machine breakdown, and a manufacturer with all the speed of a rocking horse! :x

If you click on the link which says "This one" it will take you to the full explanation of the ANACRONYM shown on the key fob. :)
I'm sure if you ask, somebody would advise on how to deal with tailgaters who intimidate you.

How long have you been driving? The first 12 months often show up little things that you or your instructor overlooked - but you never stop learning.

If it is on top of a traffic light pole it is not a speed or red light camera. Probably radar to detect vehicles as this is very common.

It could be a spy camera, and I have even seen what I believe to be combined spy camera & RFID readers on traffic lights. Not that we have anything to worry about there...

I'm sorry, but I have seen them. They sure don't look like radar. Might be nothing to do with the traffic lights, but they are on the same poles.

There are currently two types of unit mounted on traffic light/pedestrian light poles.
The standard X-band doppler radar transmitters/receivers, to both measure traffic and pedestrians. And the basic traffic cctv cameras, usually using a direct link to a nearby receiver.

Maybe you can explain why we are still going backwards in the world instead of forwards. I'd say we have a lot to be paranoid about wouldn't you?
