The 50mg alcohol limit rearing its head again. I remember reading some research a few years ago that showed accident levels falling with alcohol levels between 0 and 80mg. I can't seem to find it now. Does anybody know where I could find it?

Thanks in advance

:welcome: back :)

There is a whole raft of info at the following websites :
dft website Here
Study into the legislative regime for drink and drug driving Here
Number of fatal accidents reported to police involving at least one driver/rider
over the legal alcohol limit, 2003-2007 - here

RoSPA supports a range of measures against drink-driving. Drinking and Driving Policy Statements - May 2005Here

Would 50mg Work - website Here and 50mg here

I follow a strict never drink and drive habit. I appreciate medicines are include alcohol and some foods too so a complete ban would be un-necessary and totally against common sense. :)

I cant't help with a reference but I do remember a study some fifteen years ago in which bus drivers were tested at various levels of alcohol. It was found that after a single unit of alcohol their driving improved. I don't know if this research has been discredited or, more probably, simple hushed up. The result isn't implausible given that a low level of alcohol is relaxing and improves brain function. http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/InTheNews/MedicalReports/GeneralHealth/1092766793.html

Excellent pleased that we could help.
The latest PR from Villiers that just came through is :
14 Mar 10
Conservatives - Villiers wrote:
Responding to reports that Labour's North review into the laws on drink and drug driving will recommend reducing the legal limit from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg, Shadow Transport Secretary, Theresa Villiers, said:

“If the Conservatives are elected as the next Government, we would not reduce the drink driving limit to 50mg. We do not believe that the case has been made to justify such a change. We would keep the existing limit and focus on improving enforcement of the current rules on drink driving.

“We also believe that far more needs to be done to crack down on those who take to the roads when their driving is impaired by the use of illegal drugs. It is astounding that 30 years after the introduction of the breathalyser test, this country has no equivalent for roadside testing for driving under the influence of illegal drugs. A Conservative Government would put that right by authorising the use of drugalyser technology for use on our roads, as part of our efforts to combat the menace of drug driving."
