Hiya ..

A friend and I were eastbound on the A31 this afternoon, both on motorcycles. As we approached the services at Picket Post we noticed the 'Safety Partnership' van with its rear windows open monitoring the oncoming traffic. My friend and I were both of the same mind that we ought to slow a little, even though the forward facing camera would only capture our smiling faces, but as we slowed we saw a second van, marked Highways Agency with a pole mounted surveillance camera facing in the direction of travel. We both presumed that this was for the purposes of reading the rear plates of any vehicle passing the 'vehicle speed data gathering site'.

Can this work for the purposes of enforcing speed offences?

If so we both might be in line for a congratulatory letter and invitation sometime within the next fortnight ...

Sorry if this is a typical first post - sometimes stealth policing is a little irritating.

G

Picket Post is a place with a higher than expected accident rate so it is not surprising that this might be a place where enforcement is carried out. Only you know if you might have been exceeding the limit.

I would imagine that the HA van was solving the problem which you outline. You forgot that any amount of taxpayer's money can be spent on speed enforcement.

The Highways Agency vehicle would not have been doing enforcement of any kind. We have no enforcement powers. ;)

I am sure that you are totally correct about this.

Do you co-operate with other Government agencies, for example, the partner organisations within the SCPs?

The speed enforcement officer doesn't need another camera. A note of a motorcycle registration can simply be made as it comes into view. Job done.

News to me, the dozens of HATO patrol vehicles I've driven have never had cameras in. Our bosses are vehemently against getting them fitted!! :o

I believe it's a silent partnership for the purposes of advertising the safety aspect. We have nothing to do with the running of the cameras. ;)

, i know a while back there was talk of HATO'S utlising on board cameras to film the incidents they attended to assist in any further investigations

Interesting to hear from the HA that they don't gather this kind of information.

Do Camera vans generally have two operators..? I can't honestly see the guy having enough time to jump out of his seat in the back of the van and get the numbers... and yes, TBH one of the plates might not quite have met current size regs, :whome: ,

I'm kinda resigned to the prospect of a ticket, but the optimist in me keeps telling me it's going to be ok - I'll let you know!

If the operator of the speed enforcement vehicle didn't record your number in some way you will not be getting a ticket.

It is possible that the speed enforcement officer could request evidence from the HA but very unlikely.

And to bring this back to the real world:
I requested a million quid from my bank, and it was met with the same reaction as the 2 made up events above!
