Introduction:
I have copied this from my own forum and put it into the "blether" section of this "motoring" forum as I feel that the drivers who read and write to this "safe speed" site should know about this subject - that is if they don't know already of course !
As the owner has not bothered to put a general motoring section on this road-safety forum I thought that I should just start one here and maybe others might like to kick Safespeed in the pants to encourage him to make a proper section for general motoring subjects.
( Of couse I am going to get a slagging from him for having the temerity to try to give him advice......I CAN HANDLE IT ! ).
ANYWAY...here is the important post:

I always knew that new cars depreciated a lot by just driving them out of the showroom, but I
NEVER realised by how much.

WIRA'S ALL MY MONEY VANISHED? May 13 2004
£9bn losses for car buyers
By Ruki Sayid
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk
DRIVERS who buy a new car can see up to 63 per cent of its value disappear by the time it is six months old.
Depreciation slashes the value by an average of £3966 in 26 weeks £21.70 a day.
It means that collectively,UK motorists lose a staggering £9.6billion in the first six months of ownership each year, according to a report by Used Car Buyer magazine.
The worst at holding its value was Proton's Wira. It costs from £7499 new but was worth just 37 per cent of that after 26weeks.
At the other end of the scale was Nissan's Z350coupe,which costs £24,000. It didn't lose any of its value in the first six months.
The magazine found depreciation is the biggest single expense of running a new car equal to 66p a mile.
Price guide editor James Ruppert said the losses were 'staggering' at a time of record new car sales 2.58million last year.
He added: 'It's not difficult to understand why nearly a million savvy buyers opt to buy a nearly new car each year.'
Jeff Paterson, senior car editor at used car valuations 'bible' Glass's Guide, said: 'It is all about supply and demand.
'The loss can be minimised with niche cars, such as Porsches, but buyers of bread-and-butter models can expect a bigger hit.'
Mercedes-Benz yesterday recalled 35,000 cars in the UK because of a brake problem.
E-Class saloons built from March 2002, E-Class estates built from March 2003 and SL-Class roadsters built from October 2001 should be taken to dealers for a free check.
