Introduction:

I have copied this from my own forum and put it into the "blether" section of this "motoring" forum as I feel that the drivers who read and write to this "safe speed" site should know about this subject - that is if they don't know already of course !

As the owner has not bothered to put a general motoring section on this road-safety forum I thought that I should just start one here and maybe others might like to kick Safespeed in the pants to encourage him to make a proper section for general motoring subjects.

( Of couse I am going to get a slagging from him for having the temerity to try to give him advice......I CAN HANDLE IT ! ).

ANYWAY...here is the important post:

I always knew that new cars depreciated a lot by just driving them out of the showroom, but I NEVER realised by how much.

Read this and weep:

WIRA'S ALL MY MONEY VANISHED? May 13 2004

£9bn losses for car buyers

By Ruki Sayid

http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk

DRIVERS who buy a new car can see up to 63 per cent of its value disappear by the time it is six months old.

Depreciation slashes the value by an average of £3966 in 26 weeks £21.70 a day.

It means that collectively,UK motorists lose a staggering £9.6billion in the first six months of ownership each year, according to a report by Used Car Buyer magazine.

The worst at holding its value was Proton's Wira. It costs from £7499 new but was worth just 37 per cent of that after 26weeks.

At the other end of the scale was Nissan's Z350coupe,which costs £24,000. It didn't lose any of its value in the first six months.

The magazine found depreciation is the biggest single expense of running a new car equal to 66p a mile.

Price guide editor James Ruppert said the losses were 'staggering' at a time of record new car sales 2.58million last year.

He added: 'It's not difficult to understand why nearly a million savvy buyers opt to buy a nearly new car each year.'

Jeff Paterson, senior car editor at used car valuations 'bible' Glass's Guide, said: 'It is all about supply and demand.

'The loss can be minimised with niche cars, such as Porsches, but buyers of bread-and-butter models can expect a bigger hit.'

Mercedes-Benz yesterday recalled 35,000 cars in the UK because of a brake problem.

E-Class saloons built from March 2002, E-Class estates built from March 2003 and SL-Class roadsters built from October 2001 should be taken to dealers for a free check.

In the absence of creativity and imagination we get the one-line putdown !

PPM - I read it in the newspaper and thought it was simplisitic, sensationalist claptrap then. No need for you to repeat it, but then you are the one criticising lack of originality, creativity and imagination.

PS Paul - I for one will not disrespect you for editing/deleting/banning this twit, if only for clogging your server with irrelevant nonsense that genuine Safespeed members are paying for.

At the risk of chucking a few billy-goats under the bridge, so what?

I'm sure that most new car buyers realise very well that their purchases will depreciate steeply in the first couple of years of ownership.

But there are obvious advantages to buying a new car as opposed to a used one - precise choice of model, colour, engine size, trim level; reliability, manufacturer's warranty, breakdown cover etc.

That must be worth something as a premium - and private buyers in a free market are making a rational judgment as to what it is worth to them.

I remember reading a story about a guy in Essex who had bought a new Ford every year from his local dealership for 21 years. Some might think he's a fool, but he must have worked out that the perceived advantage to him of doing that is worth paying for.

Regards,

Peter

Please lighten up.

Just because he may have an alternative view to you you are trying to put him down. I remember being subjected to the same abuse from you as this fella. Why? Well for exactly the same reason.

Whats the point of having a forum with everyone having the same viewpoint as the leader all slamming each others di*&s in the door and having a great time.

Let the bloke post and take the tag off.

Buy an ex hire car at auction, all will be 6 months old or have 15k miles on the clock, whichever is first. Usually about half price of a new one and you get the balance of the warranty and a car that has been serviced regularly.

So you don't choose the colour and trim but you get everything else. As far as I am concerned only the wife is bothered about the colour and the trim!

I second that.

If someone breaks forum rules moderate as appropriate.

If they simply disagree with you that is their prerogative - defeat them with the superior quality of your logic!

If their comments are irrelevant then simply don't bother replying...

It ain't as simple as that. I perceive PPM's original post in this thread as spam. It's an unoriginal piece, simply copied and pasted into this forum. A link would have sufficed.

Like all other spam, it serves a dubious purpose and is now occupying space that Paul is paying for.

In which case surely the best solution is to introduce a rule about such "mis-use" - if one doesn't already exist - and then apply it to either remove the post or even replace it with a hyperlink.

That way the forum is seen as being fair, even-handed and tolerant, which can only be to the benefit of SafeSpeed.

Ultimately, if someone were to keep posting irrelevant guff, and it were simply tolerated (and ignored) then there could be no accusations of bias, and in the end they'd simply get bored and go away!

FWIW I think PPM has raised some interesting points elsewhere. I agree that this thread is a bit off-topic, but it is after all an off-topic section!
