I'm sure someone here will know the answer to this question :) I currently have to negotiate a set of roadworks where a new shopping centre is being built. The roadworks are on a busy stretch of dual carriageway but, due to the inability of drivers in this country to use both lanes then merge in turn, it takes ages to get through them.

In case it's relevant, the roadworks are in Glasgow, here The red shopping basket is the site of the new centre. Access roads are currently being created, including a new slip off the motorway. The problem is heading east along the d/c to the motorway. The clueless wonders all get into 1 lane as they come off the roundabout. In rush hour the queue extends across the roundabout and causes traffic to queue in all 5 roads leading on.

I was hoping to speak to whoever sets up the works and suggest that they alleviate the problem by signing the road to tell drivers to use both lanes and then merge in turn to use all the available road space. Anyone know who I should ask to speak to?

Assuming it's not a trunk route, the Local Authority is the place to go. Glasgow City Council (unless they changed their name).

If it's a trunk route in Scotland, then the Scottish Executive (I think... In England it would be the Highways Agency. Anyone clarify?)

The highway authority, whoever that may be (probably LA)

They will then get onto the contractor and take it from there.

Alternatively you could contact the 'client' who I presume is the shopping centre...or the contractor director. There should be an information board and number.

Quite correct Paul.

Local Authority for non-trunk routes and Scottish Exec (or their nominated term contractor (BEAR round here or Amey in the Glasgow area AFAIK)

The contact numbers for the term contractors should be posted on signs after every junctions (though they usually aren't :( )

Oops, forgot to update this thread.

I drove over there one lunchtime and spoke to the Balfour Beattie site manager. We had a nice chat for 5-10 minutes regarding the problems with congestion etc. He agreed that merge in turn would probably solve the problem, but that they needed permission from the council to change the signage and that they might not agree. I offered to complain to the council to help things along. He was not keen on that idea! We agreed that he would fax a request to the council.

That evening the road was congestion free. It has stayed that way :!:

They did not put up merge in turn signs but instead appear to have re-jigged the lane closure to allow for a much shorter single lane section. The road returns to 2 lanes before the traffic lights at the entrance to the M77: with the short slip to the motorway on-ramp that makes 4 lanes available for vehicles to queue in at the lights so the traffic never backs up past the lane closure - problem solved!

RESULT :D
