Hi , Im new here and enjoy reading your forums on a regular basis and have just registered.
I dont know if this is the right forum to post in but here goes, i own a fiat car and twice know someone has tried to steal my number plates. Got up yesterday and found someone had tried to take them off again with some kind of tool.
I live in North Essex and this seems to be quite common round here at the moment, but what worries me is that if they do get stolen or cloned eg to put on the same make of car. This has been happening in my area and if they commit offences eg speeding etc beings im the registered keeper of that number plate, ill get the tickets. I have informed the police who seem to be indifferent to the fact and just dont seemed bothered.
I will also be informing DVLA as well to see if they can help, any advice on this would be appreciated.
If this has happened to anyone else on here whose number plates have been stolen or cloned onto a different car your advice would be greatly appreciated. I have only passed my test about 2 months ago and im nearly 45 now and only just learning that 6 points puts me back to square one, which is not the problem as i stick to the speed limits, but what can i do if they do get stolen or cloned.
kind regards
David

Expect some of the BIB on here will confirm ,but any reports to police ask for an incident number --our area use something like 123456/ of todays date - that way report gets logged. Keep a record fo future record - also helps to see a pattern. That was advice local police gave our residents association.

hi thanks for replying botach ill ring them again if it happens, my neighbour caught them last time so im lucky on that score.
It just seems though the police are not interested at all, i bet they will though if they see half my number plate missing if i drive around. Not even a visit from the local constable, what does worry me though if something does come through the post especially a traffic offence the onus on me is to prove innocence as i work nights that shouldnt be a problem as i very rarely drive during the day anyway only to work and shopping.
kind regards
David

Might be worth putting a couple of stickers or something in the backwindow/front window. Something that would be visible/not visible on the speed camera photos if somebody has cloned you reg. No sticker/stickers in wrong place - not you car.

Nice idea - cerberus - since it's a fiat - it's got the fiat badge on front and rear - black out the name --black tape --something not too permanant - might not help with the law , but at least you've got a starting point.

I think you'll find if your plates get nicked, the police will take it more seriously. You would also be recommended to re-register the vehicle if that happens.

Its a big and up and coming crime that has been mentioned on here before - its the only way for the scrotes to get around all the CCTV/ANPR/Cash Cameras!

On the subject of plates, is it me or are there masses of cars with suspiciously 'grimy' patches over key numbers/letters on their plate? Some seem particularly neatly 'grimed'.

I think this is normally a result of people not washing the plates rather than deliberately making them dirty. I suppose they do this to make themselves feel better about making the camera operators job more difficult (i.e. it somehow feels less sinful to leave the already dirty plate alone when compared to smearing mud over a clean plate).

You COULD try having ' Number plates stolen, police please stop' put along the bottom of your new plate instead of the plate brand.

No-one will go near them if they've got an invite for the police to stop them.

That's what the government want you to believe of me. If they get back in I'm emigrating.
