Hi all,

Casual visitor since the start of the forums and have read with interest your efforts.

However, I was surprised that nobody from this website decided to stand in the local elections to try an effect a change in road safety policy.

It appears (from online and telephone polls that come up in the media from time to time) that about 2/3 - 3/4 of the public would like to see obvious 'revenue earning' cameras removed. If a minority party stands at local level for an issue that people feel very strongly about, they seem to have a good deal of success against the 'big three' - note how the BNP and UKIP basically stand on one issue that people have strong opinions about. Whether you agree with their views or not - they get results.

Would Paul consider founding 'The Safespeed Party'?

Dave

Certainly it's been discussed, and many thanks for the implied vote of confidence.

But I happen to believe that the business of Parliament is serious and not well served by "single issue" politics.

In fact, I'd go several stages further and say that my conscience would prevent me from running for Parliament because I know I wouldn't make the time to vote intelligently on many of the issues. Ironically, that position probably makes me better qualified to stand than many MPs. :)

Paul,

I agree with you stance.

I was talking more on a local level, where it would be easier to get the voice of reason heard and to make direct changes to help the community.

As Billy Connolly once said:

"The desire to be a politician should automatically bar you from becoming one"

Yes, that's what you said isn't it? I'll give it full consideration. Thanks.

There is a lot of truth in that.

Unfortunately, I believe that something happens to the brains of politicians as soon as they are elected. You can even see it at council level.

So it would seem that the solution to overcome the Connolly/Plato conundrum is to force people who don't want to be politicians to be one!

OK, I'll get the rope and bag, you grab Paul and we'll bundle him into the back of the van and get him down to Westminster :D

Think the only requirement for becoming a politition is the lack of common sense.

Don't have to go far to come across something that makes you think

.oO(what were they thinking when they thought up that idea?)

Seems it goes for a lot of parties too, like human rights everytime they start spouting nonesense about burglers having rights! Judges everytime they give the criminals some ridiculous small sentance, councils for thinking they have a clue what people want... should i go on? lol

Personally, the thought of not being around in another 10 years starts to look good
