I was riding up the A46 towards Nottingham the other day. I was being flashed by on-coming cars and as a result slowed down. When I approached a lay-by I noticed no less than four coppers with one holding a camera. They were all wearing high visibility clothing but due to the position of the trees they could not be seen until you were almost passing.

The point is that there were no camera signs or warnings of speed enforcement. Surely this is in violation of the code of practice...for what it’s worth.

Does anyone else know of similar bending of the rules and if so what can be done about it.

This kind of thing is now very common. Endless politicians drip on about high visibility etc... but they are generally liars. I can't suggest what to do apart from making sure you don't vote labour at next election, because it will only get worse.

There is the possibility that this was an ANPR check rather than a speed trap, were there motobikes there as well, this is an indication of ANPR activity, would also explain why they were "hiding"

None of the practices you have described are illegal.

The dft guidelines are exactly that, guidelines only.

The Police are allowed to record your speed in whatever method they choose as long as the equipment is approved by the home office to be used in the manner they have used it. Quite right too.

Was it the police or the scamera partnership?

The partnerships are only supposed to operate within their signed areas, but the police can obviously check speed wherever they want.

In which case what is the point of the guidelines, apart from as a public relations smokescreen?

But the guidelines have only ever been that, guidelines.
Most anti-camera sites have pictures on them of misplacement, hiding, non-reflective coverings of cameras....even the sat-nav is not immune from that....the mobile camera placement sitings put-out by the police "we wil be operating mobile cameras within ****** *******" are usually given just for effect...
Fortunately, driving a van means that I am largely immune from speed cameras. Largely. Areas with speed humps also get by-passed, but that's mainly because of the effect on the suspension.
