Lots.

Because there are buildings on either side.

No.

My alternative is to leave it the way it is, as it seems that this 'improvement' is going to make things worse. I'm quite happy to be proven wrong: only time will tell.

Your post is very heavy on criticism and very short on alternatives. Where does the quote say that the road will be narrowed, and why do you take the view that this will inhibit capacity anyway? I don't see how it's possible to add pavements to a road without the road becoming narrower. Wide loads ...

I'm yet to be convinced. After what they did to Dalton a few years ago when they built the bypass (street 'furniture' absolutely everywhere, and the road through the town made so narrow that two buses can no longer pass each other, as well as lots of pretty coloured bricks and tarmac - oh, and a 20m...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/4258368.stm Drivers are being warned to expect disruption in the centre of Barrow in Cumbria over the next few months. Construction work is due to begin on Monday to improve traffic flow on one of the most problematic junctions in Hindpool Road. The roundab...

Taxpayer's money is paying the wages of people to ring up the taxpayer and beg for money? The mind boggles.

Bear in mind that the average driving standard is a lot lower there. At least, that's what I've gathered from what people I know from the US have told me about their driving... Fortunately the traffic density is a lot lower, so you shouldn't have too many problems. And it's easier to park in cities....

If you're coming up to a horse travelling in your direction, how on earth do you stop and let it go round you? :P

I saw a very similar thing (to the Magic Roundabout) in High Wycombe, too. Nearly gave me a heart attack, as I completely wasn't expecting it, and was attempting to navigate at the same time, with an irate passenger who had no idea where we were going! Fun times...

I think it's the fact that you're faced with the choice of "merge, or drive into the Lune" that makes it quite so nasty...!

I remember exiting from a service station on a recent trip down the M6 and it had a trumpet style slip road that was utterly way too short. However, as a daily user of M6 J34 (Lancaster, where you are given about 50 yards to merge and it's impossible to be going fast enough) for half a year, I'm rea...

Crap, I have a 200 mile round trip at the weekend, and half a tank left. Hopefully we won't be screwed too badly up here, I don't think there's enough people to use up an entire petrol station's supply in a few days...!

When we researched this on getting our motorhome in 1995, it basically came down to 'the same as cars' for vehicles under a certain weight - I think the weight was something like 3500Kg. Ours struggles to reach 55 anyway, so it's never really been a problem. (Especially considering the engine is cur...

I could be wrong, but from my watching of motorsport, it's my understanding that the tread depth isn't such a huge feature in how grippy it is in the wet. It's more the nature of the tread that's important - the wetter it is, the more grooves you need, and having the existing ones deeper isn't going...

They had these on the gatsos on the M6 roadworks around J34-35 last year - when the roadworks weren't at that particular spot, or they weren't working (I think this happened at weekends, although can't quite remember), they'd cover up the cameras. Unfortunately, people still panic braked in front of...

Isn't driving on the pavement a crime in itself? I certainly know you're not supposed to, although maybe it just comes under the umbrella of something you already listed.
