Driving is a privilege, not a right

I often read this. The statement is, with respect, quite clearly
wrong. "Driving" or a "driving licence" is NOT a privilege. It is an
entitlement
, subject to conditions. The conditions are: test pass,
satisfactory health and eyesight, maximum number of penalty points, etc.

The distinction is, imo, important. A "privilege" can be granted, withheld
or withdrawn on the whim of the person in whose gift it resides. An
entitlement cannot.

Sorry, Observer. I accept what you say. I was wrong, and I agree
with you that the distinction which you have pointed out, between a
privilege
and an entitlement, is important.

But nevertheless it is regrettable that at present there doesn't seem to be
either :
* any sort of official support for those drivers who decide for themselves to
give up driving since, for one reason or another, their driving ability is
no longer up to standard.
* any sort of procedure that encourages 'at risk' drivers to consider
and decide for themselves whether or not to give up driving, perhaps
just for a short while.

Aber doch!...

Such people can find some mobility help - but admit there are a few hoops and forms to fill in. Visit to CAB/doctor/Social Services -- will point in right direction for help with taxis and perhaps car expenses/allowance for person doing some ferrying of such people. But - ist up to individual to seek out such help....

There are sadly ...   :x those who know exactly how to manipulate system - und ist wrong.... :x

People do think "it cannot happen to them or do now want to tempt providence" Was on receiving end of this type myself - so subjectively would agree some carrot should be given some thought to.

But - by this token we are all at risk of something going suddenly wrong mit our "human machine" und we could not base driving entitlement on genetic screening or potential risk factor - thus perhaps we must rely on education which informs und allows people to make informed decsions - but at same time place alternative or carrot which do not cause undue hardships for temporary break. Though normally - if patient has fit/convulsion for no reason or prescribed very strong medicine or ist diagnosed as diabetic - ist compulsory break of up to 12 months to allow adjust to routine and treatment.

But - tricky one..as so many factor to consider - and I am the one who really got hit hard by man with heart problem...

Hi belladonna.

We do actually pull people over this. Think Wildy is best to chat about this - she works for one such company.

Know both Mad Doc and Wildy :neko: have posted before over prescription drug dangers and need to read labels and follow advice.

This is the first post I've ever seen you write that contains no  ! I think your account has been hijacked!

Who's this Wildy person? Reading other posts, I thought that was you - obviously it isn't...
