Drink driver flagged down off duty officer

The occupants of a car which became stuck on a verge at the hands of a drink-driver unwittingly flagged down a car driven by an off-duty police officer, a court heard last week.

Daniel Richard Lee, aged 18, of Meyrick Street, Pembroke Dock, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol when he appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday, January 3rd.

The court heard police arrived on the scene near Freystrop at 4.25am on December 7th to find a MG Rover stuck on a grass verge, after Lee’s friend flagged down a car which happened to be driven by a local police officer.

Lee, an apprentice at Main Port Engineering, was found to have 82mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath, the legal limit is 35mg.

Judge Manning-Davies said: “It was unfortunate for him, but fortunate for the community.”
He added: “You should never have got behind the wheel of a car, you were nearly two and a half times over the limit.”

Lee was disqualified from driving for 18 months, and ordered to pay £200 in fines and costs.
Why were the friends happy to get in the car with him?
