I've long been seeking a publisher for the 'Safe Speed Book'. I've been hoping to work with a publisher on it's development to tune it well to the needs of the publishers own market. It hasn't happened.

Various things have happened along the way, some was going to edit it. Someeone was going to help me write it. Lots have expressed one sort of interest or another.

But it hasn't happened yet. The new idea is to employ a free lance editor to bring it up to a publisher-ready standard and hawk it around. But to do that we'd need to fund the editor. At a wild guess we might be talking about £10k.

Is anyone interested in helping fund this sort of development of the book on a strict business / profit share basis? My initial guess would be:

30% for £10k investmant until £20k repaid then 10% on royalties thereafter.

So on £33k of royalties you would break even.
On £66k of royalties would make 100% profit.

Might anyone be interested in this?

It's a young idea (15 minutes!) and is obviously capable of being tuned and developed.

Looking around online companies are charging about £5 a page to edit. (US based ). I assume there are UK equivalents. I have the next 4 weeks free (still signed off) so could make a dent in scrubbing it up to some higher standard if that would help.

There are online courses that train you in the art of copy editing. Perhaps the best bet would be to find someone that was interested in doing that anyway and would like a good first job?!

Did you try that independent publisher that publishes the Vernon Coleman books?

I'm thinking more of a compiler-editor job. We have the material already on the web site and in the forums, but it has to be built into a 'story' to make a readable book. I have spoken to a few who would do that job, and one in particular who does it for publishers normally rather than for authors. I think you're more thinking of (what I would call) sub editors.

As I recall I wrote to them and got no reply. I wrote to Veron too and had a couple of nice emails exchanged, but it didn't come to anything.

Paul, not too sure of your background in business, so this may be teaching granny to suck eggs.

But:
what is the business case for the book?
e.g. income, awareness, raise the game etc.

What is the target market?
e.g. a hand book for road safety professionals, a complement to existing advanced material, a policy briefing document etc.

What is the best way to publish it?
Is an e-book easy to develop and distribute, what value will a freelancer add? your quite hands on, is that the best use of 10k for safespeed?

just some thoughts.
