I usually find pulling on the clutch and blipping the throttle works.

That works a treat for for me on my '76 Z1 fitted with a Harris 4-1 wearing the (road legal thanks to C&U) race baffle.

Likewise with the father in law's ride, circa '67 hardtailed Tribsa with straight throughs.

So lets have a think. Kick the side stand from under a stationary motorcycle and it falls over. So even with the engine off, bikes arn't the last word in safety.

And you get put in hospital by the owner :D

I'm struggling with the mentality that goes with buying a machine that does 0-60 in 3 secs, touch 100mph in first and pull wheelies in the first 3 gears and then worry about safety. It's like keeping a pet tiger and worrying it will bite you.

My bike pulls wheelies in 4th gear as well.
But seriously, what's the problem with having that amount of power available? I have that sort of power cos:
a) I enjoy it
b) I can handle it
c) I know when to use and when not to use it
d) at 6'5" & 18 stone, I'd look damn silly on a scooter
e) I don't want to have to be forever changing gears on a slight gradient

The point I am trying to make is that people buy bikes, especialy fast ones for thrill seeking. Why else would the lastest 600 or 1000cc sports bike need to be even more frantic and exiciting than last years? You don't buy a machine that does 0-100 in 5 seconds and does 100mph rolling wheelies with safety at the forefront of your mind do you? I'm not saying for one second that you want to crash, but if you safety was at the forefront of your mind you'd be buying a Volvo.

Don't most people crash bikes unassisted? If that is the case instead of spending £££ on noisey pipes why not spend less money on dvanced training so you judge the corner instead of inspecting in scenery?

Do you think that (as I've already asked) Wayne in his chavved up Saxo is safer with is Dustbin for an exhaust than he would be with the stock one?

If your noisey pipes are a safety feature, can I assume all of you noisy sods enjoy significantly lower insurance premiums?

Oh, and don't even think about ear plugs if you've got loud pipes. You choose them so live with them.

Funnily enough Adam, ear plugs are worn primarily to exclude wind noise which can and does damage your hearing. Its nothing to do with excluding exhaust noise cos thats lovely

And what a fantastic sensation it is too! :D

It's that good, I'd like to be able to keep repeating it over and over again.

Which is why I ride safely, within my skill limits.

Unfortunately there will be times when a rider will have an 'unassisted' off, but that's life.

can we try to establish a difference between loud and noisy? to me loud can be "not loud enough" or "too loud" but niether of them is noise. to me noise is bad, usually associated with mechanical parts making a noise and eventually detrimental to the efficient working of those parts.

not all loud pipes sound good and some are way too loud even to me. I've changed the silencers (silencers?? should say reverse cone megas  ) because they really were obnoxious. I've got much better ones now, which still sound fruity, don't make my ears bored on 'top gear at the same revs for miles' roads but are loud enough to stop even the most suicidal of teenagers from wandering into the road. A couple of mates on modern bikes follow me through traffic when filtering because car drivers hear me and move over but ignore headlights in their mirrors. maybe they think the glinting is just another ovlov.

Well, if the other road users didn't piss us off by not looking out of their little cages then we wouldn't have to consider returning the favour by giving them a little light shone into their caves, would we?

To ride around with full beam blinding them (which contravenes H/C Rule 94 for a start) simply because you believe you have a right of way is just as selfish, self-centred and annoying as making too much noise with exhausts.

But according to another post of yours, you say that headlights don't make us visible. Or is it only main beam that does?

so, what your saying is, that wind noise will damage your hearing, but over 100db of exhaust noise won't and that everyone in the 1 mile radius that can hear your bike screaming it's nuts off are just as enthusiastic about your pride and joy as you are. It's funny, because a few months ago with listening to one of my favourit albums at a high rate of decibels, my neighbour suggested that this wasn't his favorite album and would I be so kind as to turn it down. Which I duly did and it's not been on that loud since. Maybe I should have suggested to him it was at that volume for safety reasons
