Received e-mail from one of my sisters - the one who works at a school in Altrincham,

She tells me that she drives along the back lanes to avoid the A56/M60 jams.

She tells me that just before the Broad Oak School on the A6144 - which is close to a 40 mph to 30 mph limit. GMP have a Smiley Sid/VAS which shows a scam sign and flashes up a reminder of the 30 mph limit about 50 yards before the school gates and a pelican.

She tells me this is a "sound system" as it focuses and there;s an instinctive glance on dash and skim of road immediately ahead for hazards. She also tells me that as she approaches a sharp bend in Flixton .. she comes across another such device warning her of the bend and reminding her of the limit.

She tells me that per her general observation of all road users in this area.. the effects seem to be very "positive" and she finds this a "welcome change of tactic and more traffic calming than the vans which she used to see there! "

So ..perhaps someone somewhere is really listening to us all after all  There are better ways of gettiing people to observe the safest speed without scamming and fleecing

I have lived in the Flixton area for years.

Nearly every accident I have seen or heard of has been at a junction - most of them at the junction at the top of the Mile Road.

Most of these accidents were because there was a green filter light leading to a give way about 5 yards after the light. Most people saw the filter and turned left at the junction ignoring the give way, hitting the traffic from the right that had right of way.

They've fixed that now. Only took them more than 5 years to realise.

There have been two other accidents near the signs in Flixton, but before they were in place. Both accidents were inexperienced young drivers doing massively in excess of both the limit and the safe speed for the road (estimating about 50-60mph in a built up 30mph zone - one of them a woman pedestrian was killed after a car went literally flying over a hump back bridge which precedes a right hander).

Personally I find them unnecessary and patronising, and they trigger at speeds well below 30mph - incidently in areas where 40mph is reasonably safe.

Mixed views, there ar some in Kent ahead of blind junctions that do work well, some have the speed limit come up, and others have 'Warning Hidden Junction' so am all in favour of them.

There are some recently went up in Cold Norton, Essex that trigger at 25mph in a 30mph limit, have only been in 4 months and now being routinely ignored, so somewhat counter productive. Shame becuase they are on the crest of a hill with turnings beyond them. So would be a good idea if they didn't trigger so low.

There's one along Tiptree Heath. It works intermittently. Coming home tonight I worked out what its current fault mode is - it tells you to slow down if the vehicle approaching the sign FROM THE REAR is exceeding the speed threshold. I was aiming at it (from the front) on the way home. My usual modus operandi is to check it out if there is nothing else about (purely as a service to the community you appreciate). However, tonight there was a car coming toward me so I was goody two-shoes - well under the limit. However, as the fairly fast approaching car got about 200 yards from the sign, it told ME to slow down!
