Saw Newsnight yesterday, there was an amusing article about the police using the very loopholes that they are criticising the public for using... if you get what I mean.
I don't know where an appropriate "listen again" link is, or somesuch, but here is a mini-discussion about it I found via Google.

Wonder if the bbc will get a copy of the photo via an apeal to the information commisioner after their foi request was turned down or was the real reason for refusal to prevent embaressment to the police. Pity Medd Hugh and co couldn't spend the same effort over an officer as is spent over joe public. No entry in the log book, no other evidence ??? --seems strange .
Wonder if i and mates at work left logbook of van blank if police would take same benelovent view??
Contrast this with Hampshire ? police CC - who was hauled into court to explain the non disclosure (s172??)

Excellent point, and the interviewer (Paxman?) did try to get him to answer the point once or twice, but fluffed it. Once he even INTERRUPTED the PC who was saying something in response to the awkward question. A few brownie points lost there for Paxman, in my book.

By the way, I also found it irritating that despite the facts / truth / logical argument point, that PC guy was BLOODY GOOD AT PRESENTING HIMSELF AND HIS ARGUMENTS. Snarl, I can imagine a lot of the public being taken in by him.

Presentation: 95%
Bedside manner: 90%
Charm initiative: 92%
Moral fibre: 3%

I was under the impression that the charm merchant was Medd Hughes - and this was his chance to try and smarm his way out of admitting that his officers had done wrong or that the photo could identify them.At the same time the rather old fashioned approach of the Hamps CC , who believed that the law must be seen to be upheld and was not happy that he had had to attend court made more sense. But which one was the better salesman, and protecting his officer ?

Yea, that's the one I meant. The one on the video screen talking to newsnight as the concluding part of the piece. I used the term PC as generic for the police representative. That one was so oozy that my pet rottweiler started licking the TV :grumpy:
