Safety fears over falling pears
A council has cordoned off pear trees in a public park over fears falling fruit could land on someone's head.

Two black pear trees in Cripplegate Park in Worcester have been sealed off with a safety barrier and tape and a sign warns people of falling fruit.
A city council spokesman said the precaution was cheaper than the potential legal cost if someone was hit on the head with a pear and sued.

The cordon will be removed when all the fruit has fallen to the ground.
Worcester is famed for its black pears and the fruit is part of the city coat of arms.

Alan Stuttard, from the city council, said: "We had a complaint from a member of the public that one of these Worcester super pears fell on them and they felt it was dangerous."

He said the pears could weigh up to 1lb (454g) and were much harder many other types of pears.

"What we are interested in is to make sure young kids don't get frightened or hurt," he added.

The trees in question were planted by Edward VIII when he was Prince of Wales.

Spineless Ba**ards!
I think it's about time the people of Worcester were reminded that elderly councilors behind the wheels of cars might have strokes, heart attacks or similar catastrophic problems, and become a sudden danger to other road users.
As a precaution, they should all be put down humanely - or at the very least, banned from taking control of a motor vehicle! :x

This sort of crap makes me so angry! I think I know why I have developed high blood pressure - now there's a thing - THEY are endagering ME!

Amazing.

In a strange way, this news story has explained to me, better than anything else, why our speed limits are being reduced to absurd levels by local councils.

I can see it now...

Fifteen years down the line, some snot-nosed spotty chav is up before the Beak for doing over an old lady...

Beak:- "What drove you to commit this vile crime...?"

Chav:- "When I wuz young, a pear fell on me 'ead and there was no sign to warn me..."

Beak:- "Oh, my God! You poor, scarred individual. Take ten shillings from the Poor Box and hurry on your way - you are a free man!"

Beak on the ball as usual...

Ho Hum!

Perhaps this is the origin of the expression "It's all gone PEAR shaped!" :(

I shudder to think of the consequences of carrying this type of risk assessment to the same lengths could be... every day I leave my house risking a loose roof slate landing on me from any one of the houses I pass... I am exposed to weather which at any time might lead to slippery roads, wind blown branches, or overhead electric cables etc. causing me untold harm.... And the worst of it is, I cant stay wrapped up in cotton wool, or I would starve because I could not risk the possibility that some loony might storm our local ASDA with a gun, in protest at the price they give the farmers (and shotgun certficate holders) for their milk!!
I could take the train - but some loony might be attempting to commit suicide by parking on Staveley level crossing in his car... in fact, I feel I should put a stop to this bygoing down to Worcester Council and fire bombing the council chamber!! :x They didnt see THAT coming did they!

Perhaps, at the point of birth, you should be given a small plaque that states:-

'Life is a sexually-transmitted, terminal condition. Pain and suffering may be experienced throughout.'

This would remove the need for Social Workers and 'No Win, No Fee' parasite solicitors.

It could even bring down the Government...

I think I'll patent it!

The post by someone "Politically correct " says it all

Then again perhaps some Govt buildings should carry the warning sign outside "Caution , may contain nuts"
