I might be looking at this a bit simplisticly, but wouldn't giving a provisional at 16 but not allowed to take the test till 17 as now solve most of the issues?

I imagine they will put the age up to 18, as they have done with many other things such as fireworks. Its to be expected and its been the trend for a long time, just a part of the nanny state we live in - more restrictions, more pointless protocols, more deskilling and more political correctness. Will it inprove anything? - i think not!

Actually, I'd be very surprised if they did - indeed Ladyman has come out clearly against it.

Yes, just think of all those new Labour voters they would lose.

Interesting is it not that another Labour politician propsoed lowering the voting age to 16.So you can vote for a d**khead Priome Minister, but cannot drive. Next thing will be raise everything to 21, but still allow Call-up for wars.

Look at what Scotland are doing with tobacco age-limit.

I’d like to see the stats on accidents for 17 year olds.

If its higher than 18 year olds, than fair do’s, erosion of freedom?

You could argue that the gov will be loosing revenue from the 17 year olds who pay road tax, and petrol tax etc –

I thought they were all about revenue

I do notice that these roads are so jam-packed these days, we need to do something over the next 50 years otherwise our children’s children wont even bother to drive as it will take an hour to get a mile up the road.

Remove pointless traffic lights. Improve quality of roads. ;)

If it takes so long to drive that people don't bother, just who is it that's blocking up the roads?

Look at China for a good example.

Many people just don’t bother to drive anymore as the roads are jam packed with thoughs who either have to, deliveries etc

SS, you have many statistics at your disposal, what’s the stats on car numbers 10 years ago? And now? Estimated numbers in 2050?

Do you really think that simply taking away a few unnecessary traffic lights will do the trick?

Honestly?

I look at it this way, if it takes me an hour to get to work now, in ten years if it takes me two hours to get to work, will I still go by car – my guess is yes, I’ll have to get up earlier, we love our cars too much.

Obviously you live in a different country to me. Most roads are never congested during a normal week. The vast majority of those that are, are only congested for a maximum of 2-3 hours a day. The only large-scale exception is parts of London, particularly South London where the road network has hardly been improved since the days of the horse and cart.

Lazy hyperbole, not sensible analysis.

Can anyone estimate the number population of the UK in 2050?
Or the number of cars in 2050?
Perhaps we should knock down a few forests and build over a few children’s parks and replace them with more roads then?

70 - 75 million in 2050 maybe?

Mostly concentrated in urban areas, thames gateway etc.

How fast do you think that car usage will grow? Do you not think we will reach a point of saturation?

Also, is the number of cars really important? is the number of miles driven more so?

How about home working? will this have an impact?

Both similar to today, or a few percentage points more. And the number of 17-21 year-olds learning to drive has fallen from about 50% to 30% in the last 10 years. Some may be deferring it, but I'm sure others never will learn, so the number of licensed drivers in the working age population will start to drop.

Oh yes, the usual "they're concreting over the countryside" drivel.

Hadn't you noticed that the government had largely abandoned building new trunk roads - all we get now are a grudging handful of small-scale bypasses and widenings?

I drive the m42 m6 every day and it is a complete nightmare. They've played with VSL and it's failed.

This is a clear example of a road that is crying out for severe widening!! Either that or forcing an alternative through the A46/M69 corridor. No forests or playgrounds there just a reluctance to choose the correct option.

Alternatively we could raise the driving age to 18 and all will be solved!

Seriously I think earlier education coupled with an extended maybe two stage test has to be the way forward. Compuslory Cycle Proficiency wouldn't harm either.

To right and some compulsory pedestrian training - reading the highway code would help

I’m sorry but that is ridicules!

I actually laughed out loud and wok someone up, it’s 2:30, and perhaps I should go to bed.

Also perhaps we should get someone to go out and actively train all Deer so they don’t run in the road, kind of like a dog trainer, anything for the driver hay.

What has the world come to.

Bring on increased roads tax’s, petrol costs, make all people drive hybrid or hydrogen cars and make people use more public transport compulsory where its unnecessary to drive.

I’ve been to China its not a nice place, thick polluted air, traffic jams everywhere.

So you want to pay far more for everything you buy in the shops, do you?

Continue parading your ignorance, mate, it keeps the rest of us entertained
