A friend of mine was killed by someone who thought that they could drive and phone at the same time. The phone proved to be too much of a distraction and the phony slewed across the road and into the on-coming traffic.
When I see people using the phone in the car it seems to me that they are severely restricted by the fact that they're only driving one-handed. A typical situation is when they need to slow down to turn a corner, but since they can't use the gear-stick they can't slow down without stalling so take the corner too fast, either cutting it or swinging wide.
