Is this why Dorset SCP is closing in March and being replaced by "Dorset Strategic Road Safety Partnership"?

Does this mean that a lot of (all?) SCPs are going to close and be replaced by new 'road safety partnerships'?

Will they be any more than another name for people who are out to get us?

Nice.

Safe Speed issued the following PR at 16:07

PR426: Speed cameras CUT AND CAPPED as DfT LOSES CONFIDENCE

news: for immediate release

Grants to local authorities announced today by Department for Transport cut
speed camera expenditure substantially.

* Many areas see a real-terms cut in budget
* The budget allocated will not be spent only on speed cameras, but will also
be spent on other road safety interventions
* Zero growth is allowed over the next 4 years.

Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign
(www.safespeed.org.uk) said: "The strong cut in the speed camera programme
implied by this announcement is welcome news, but it is far too little and far
too late."

"Clearly Department for Transport has LOST CONFIDENCE in the speed camera
programme and is shifting responsibility to local authorities. It is absolutely
shameful that they are doing this without a clear public admission of the
abject failure of the speed camera programme to improve road safety. Clearly
they are hoping that it will fade away - but that simply not good enough."

"Speed cameras have proved to be a major distraction from real road safety and
our roads will not get safer until they are scrapped."

<ends>

It still worries me that the "grant" is similar sums to the revenue raised by speed camera fixed penalties.

Now gordon brown is very desperatly short of cash, So this is not going to be new money. So speed camera fines must continue to fund this four year promise of funds. So they have in my eyes commited them selves to running the scams for another 4 years.

The original Dick Turpin "nett off" system ends in March. Be prepared for an SCP spending spree while they can.

I am not sure why but Lincolnshire grant goes up whilst Leicesters go down......strange.

Leicester SCP expendature 2004/5 = £1.5 Million. Budget for 2007/08 £1.2 Million. Shame :x

So is this a good thing or a bad thing?

And will the new partnerships still be made up of the people who set the speed limits, the people who enforce the law and the people who put you on trial?

I think they still will. But in the past when they have been quizzed about their failure to cut total road deaths they have always hidden behind the fact that they only manage camera enforcement. As far as I can see their remit will extend road safety in general including speed activated signs....so nowhere to hide then.
