POLICE and road safety bosses will tackle the rising death toll on Suffolk's roads with renewed vigour this year following a sharp rise in the number of people killed in crashes.

Final figures for 2006 show 47 people were killed on the county's roads in 40 separate collisions - 30% higher than in the whole of 2005, which saw 36 killed in 33 accidents.

The grim death toll is the highest in Suffolk since 2003 and has dismayed road safety campaigners.

But Suffolk police pledged last night to do all it could to reduce collisions during the next 12 months.

It will be interesting to see what spin Sufolk Safecam manage to put on this terrible news. It really comes as no surprise to me when the standard of driving on the roads in Suffolk seems to get worse by the day.

The local news carried a story last night saying that road deaths had risen in every county in East Anglia.

In the last few years this news would always have been followed by an interview with a representative from the Camera Partnership or Brake banging on about speeding drivers. Things seem to be changing though - last night there was no mention of speeding, instead the follow up was about improver courses for new drivers and the proposals for a more rigorous driving test.

The Police have also been noticably more active on the A14 too. I have seen three vehicles stopped in the last two days near Ipswich and several Traffic cars driving along the A14.

Maybe the Safespeed message is finally getting through to the powers that be.

They are getting the message and shifting from speed to training as thier main message. They are reluctant to remove cameras even if they dont work.

I am suprised no one else joined this thread! :fastasleep:

Anton,

This thread on PH might be of interest (requires registration). I posted some simple spreadsheets showing trends, probably not enough data to go on though.

I understand that in Northamptonshire the fatalities have doubled this year.
