Scenario - LA contractor repairing pavement(30 limit) - one side of road closed off with lights controlling traffic .At end of lights ( about couple of van lengths) is a zebra crossing. Going through the lights(in one direction) entry to the crossing is clear ,but even with the crossing not blocked by traffic , anyone waiting to cross /emerging from the line of traffic ( from the other side)could be blocked from view ( reason that parking is prohibited on zig zag) .
Anyone know if this crossing should be taken out of use for road safety ?
Spoken to local highway dept ---no one knows.

I would say so. There's a well defined scenario like this in the 'Safety at Street Works' booklet. But in this instance its a pelican crossing I'm guessing the idea would be the same.

Bag the belisha beacons, put pedestrian barriers across the crossing and put up 'Crossing not in use signs'

And it should be identified as a construction consideration by the designer too, H&S plan if it's a CDM applicable scheme and a note on the drawing if not I would say.

All just my 2p mind :)

Thanks -Dougman

Saw my worst fears today - fortunately young lady had sense to wait till traffic on her side had stopped .
Called ;LA again today - lady i spoke to had seen this and was worried ( FFS - why not raise concerns with engineers ).and would advise engineers - on my part i intend to e mail my local County COUNCILLOR --at least if someone gets hurt - 8i've done the utmost to prevent it.

It's unlikely that the engineers have anything much to do with the traffic management. Certainly where I am (also an LA) the workforce on the ground set out the traffic control. And of course they've been on the course and got their tickets but that doesn't certify common sense!
