Ok, so we have had a fair amount of snow in Swindon. - about 2-3 inches.

So why is it people do not clear the snow off of their cars before they set off?

I saw one idiot on the motorway who thought a little square on the front of his windscreen was OK.

I drive a RWD car, so you have to be even more careful when the conditions are unknown. It does really please me when I am carefully driving round a roundabout that is covered with slush that I have some little idiot in a roller skate (the generic small car) stuck about 3 feet from my bumper because 15mph isn't fast enough for him in the poor conditions.

It makes my blood boil    Its idiots like that that make me want to invest in some serious road rage as they are not only endangering themselves, they are endangering me.

Discuss :)

I was taken out on my P&J VFR VTEC about this time last year by a woman in a BMW on the M6, who pulled across about 2" off my front tyre, her rear windscreen covered in snow, no idea I was there (she also cut across the hatchings having almost missed the slip road I was on, and I believe she was on her handheld mobile).

Tell me about it. I made sure to clear ALL the snow off my car this morning (including off the lights mr citroen f8ckwit who followed me all the way out of town!) and took things VERY steady in deed. All was well until I got out of Wootten Bassett and from there to Calne there was a nice covering all over the road.

Same thing, apparently 35mph wasn't fast enough for the bloke in the metro behind me who insisted on tailgating me all the way to Lyneham at which point I decided to pull over and let him by. What the f*ck is wrong with people?! There's snow on the road, its OBVIOUSLY slippery and still they don't slow down!?

I made it to work without so much as a lightening of the steering so I'm sat now feeling all smug and self-important. I recon everyone in the office was surprised to see me at all today...

Ahhh yes, the British and a bit of snow

On the one hand we have total panic at the thought that a couple of inches of some white crystalline substance lying on the ground is going to bring the country to a grinding halt because nobody will be able to get anywhere. So we get overcautious reactions such as that taken by Dudley Education Authority yesterday, to shut the schools today only to find that what we actually have is a light dusting like icing sugar on a cake. All that is needed is a little extra care in places where a bit of slush may be laying...

BUT, on the other hand, some halfwits jump in their cars and take absolutely no extra care at all  You'd think it was a balmy day in mid-August judging by the way some folks are making no compenasation for the wet and slippery conditions at all :furious: I'm not talking about inching along just because theres a bit of snow at the kerb, but tailgating with muck flying into the windscreen...prats, prats, prats.

well i cycled my usual 19miles in to work today.... although i have to confess to taking the MTB with nobblies.. and i'm very glad i did.

it was lovely having cars that were too timid to overtake, until you chose a safe spot & made it easy for them.. even then they came past at walking pace  and the number that realised i was waiting for them to pass and gassed it, only to go nowhere with the wheels spinning was entertaining to (although a little worrying as they tend to slide down the camber when that happens, i.e. towards me).

the only blip was approaching a min roundabout near work, with an island on the approach to find a mini too impatient to wait so started to overtake 30yards from the roundabout.... and then decide to start braking and pulling back in whilst not even halfway past me. no way i could do any hard braking or manouvre out the way without going under him.... so i ended up with pedal & handlebar leaning against his car banging on the rear window

he looked round and seemed surprised to find i hadn't disappeared into thin air :x twat

other than that, great fun... and quite possibly the most reliable method of getting back home later

Usually takes 25 mins to get to work - took me 15 this morning.

Edited to add - after I spent 10 minutes clearing the snow off the car

My dad was fine taking me to my mum's in Ipswich by car. No snow here in Felixstowe due to being near the coast but more there.

Then found out school was closed and got the train back home. Pointless waste of time. All transport was running fine.

Why are they advising people not to go unless they have to when the snow does little. Doesn't take long for all railway and main roads to thaw out.

They're British.

A few flakes of frozen precipitation and all the shops sell out of bread and milk as the country grinds to a halt!

Snow has been a real flop here. This morning it was coming down well and the forcast on the BBC site for Stafford was predicting heavy snow throughout the day.

Because I can, I took the bus to work (takes 30min instead of 10 mind) - the snow has now stopped and the BBC site now says light snow until late afternoon then sleet. (Very light indeed currently!!)

Am sitting it my office watching students playing snowballs in the field outside - along with one who is flying a bleeding great kite!

However heating in my office isn't working so I'm going home to work this pm

Exactly, not to mention cuppa soups and candles. We've become utterly enfeebled

I did something productive in my garden this morning.

Not really a snow man, as I have a small garden. More a snow boy.

I thing I have heard burm schools closed tomorrow, so half term is early.

It is easier to close the school, because the added extra time it takes teachers and pupils to get in can be a bit of a problem.
-Some members of staff or pupil may not be able to make it in.
-Some staff or pupils maybe will be late.
Result you may not have enough staff, you may have to collapse groups.
The knock on effect to the day to be honest is a pain in the arse, and you end up not really teaching. So the day is wasted anyway.
Giving about a days notice lets people make alternative arrangements for the care of the children.
-Closing schools may reduce the problem on roads.

My school used to close because the busses couldn't make it up and down the hills...
