This was the Bolton News Headlines today.

Parents plea over M61 death tragedy
By Edward Chadwick

THE family of a teenager who died after being hit by a car as he crossed the M61 have made an emotional plea for help in piecing together his final moments.

Heartbroken Michael and Sheila Green want anybody who knows why their 17-year-old son Sean was on the motorway to contact police.

The couple made the appeal for information as they spoke of their devastation.

In a statement released to The Bolton News, Mr and Mrs Green, of Whitsundale, Westhoughton, said: "Sean was an outgoing, fun loving lad who always made friends very easily.

"Sean was the joker of the family. He was always playing pranks on his brothers, Stuart and Martyn. He was always helpful, supportive and very protective of his family. He was loving, caring and dutiful. He was one of a kind and will be missed dreadfully by everyone.

"Words cannot describe the feeling of losing a son and brother in these tragic circumstances. Sean was 17 and had his whole life in front of him.

"The loss of his infectious personality has left a massive void in everyone's lives. The family is devastated by the events of the last four days and once again appeals to anyone who might have information regarding why Sean was on the motorway at that time of night to come forward and speak to the police."

Sean, a former St Joseph's RC School pupil and trainee mechanic, was hit by a Fiat Punto in the early hours of Sunday morning as he crossed the M61 between junctions five and six.

He was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital and later transferred to Hope Hospital where his family kept a contant vigil by his bedside.

Sean, a avid fan of fishing, motorbikes and music, was surrounded by his family when he stopped breathing at 10pm on Wednesday night.

A decision was made by doctors and his parents to take him off a ventilator after he suffered chronic brain damage because of his injuries.

The teenager's uncle, Chris Green, said: "Because of the pressure that his injuries had caused, he was badly brain damaged.

"A lot of his friends and family have been in to see him and the priest from Sacred Heart Church in Westhoughton read him his last rites on Tuesday night.

"All of his family want to thank the staff at Hope Hospital who have been brilliant."

The family have requested that no floral tributes are placed within the boundaries of the motorway for safety reasons.

Police have launched an investigation into the crash.

Anyone with any information is asked to call traffic police on 0161 856 8361.

Why indeed was he walking across the motorway.

Bolton seems to have a number of youngsters who seem unable to comprehend that a motorway is not a playground.

Two years ago . a girl died playing "chicken" on the M61 where it meets the A666/M60.

Another teenage girl was injured whilst walking across the A666 50 mph St Peter's Way dual carriageway .. and now a 17 year old is killed whilst crossing a motorway. :banghead: All in the dark as well...

What the hell is wrong with these kids? :banghead:

Perhaps a little more concentrated studies on what makes a "good, responsible, caring and more or less law abiding citizen apart from the odd " harmless indiscretion" " instead of "how to be a politically correct citizen" might be more beneficial and life saving to our society.

No good placing a scam van on the nearest bridge after the event .. Manchester prats. My sister and her husband saw you!

How about simply getting the police school liaison officers to actually - er - liaise with these kids and teach what the teachers and parents in that area appear unable to deliver.

I would suppose that the M61 is too easy for pedestrians to get onto!

Apparently the Bolton Paper has opened a book of condolence on their website. Naturally all this young man's pals and some others have expressed their feelings of grief and loss on the site.

However, perhaps it is me being a bit old-fashioned .. but somehow I find this rather a shallow and self-obsessive display of emotion.

Let's not beat about the bush here .. this kid was walking across a MOTORWAY in the small hours of darkness. No one appears to know why he was there .. and there is no mention of a broken down vehicle or anything. Police and his parents would not be asking this question had he been hit whilst waiting with a broken down vehicle on the hard shoulder.

There does not seem to be any regard for the poor bloke who struck him whilst driving LEGALLY on this motorway.
Perhaps instead of making a very public show of emotions - they would do more for Sean's memory by simply warning others not to walk or play around on motorways from which pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders .vehicles under 50 cc are PROHIBITED from using .. with good reason .

I do despair of this.

Has fields on each side for most of its length. Fields are Where it meets M60 .. lot of lanes and bridges over other A roads and over M60 to join it.

Where it runs through I think Farnworth outskirts/Walkden on the way to its meet up with the A580 Manchester direction only/M60/62 network is perhaps where pedestrians and chicken players may get some access. The girl who died playing chicken had reached the road via a playing field and I think the authorities were criticised for "not placing a high enough fence" at the time. This was just on the stretch where the M61 flows into A580 on the inner lanes and M60 on the outer lanes. Paper does not say where .. but if around the Westhoughton A58 exit.. again .. this has fields on each side and from memory of drives on that motorway .. cannot quie see how someone would walk onto the motorway "by accidental chance"

Quite, there must be places where it is either appealing for a pedestrian to cross in preference to another route, or attractive for children to play on.

In the former scenario it would be prudent for the LA/Highways Agency to provide a safer means of crossing in either an under- or over-pass, in the latter a fence hiding the motorway from view of playparks and preventing access would seem like the way to go.

Don't get me wrong, I am not apportioning blame to the authorities for not doing these things sooner; a 17 year old should know better than to walk on a motoroway, and the parents of young children should have them properly supervised. That said, now the problem has been identified action should be taken if theres any chance of a repetition.

My thoughts are with the poor driver and any passengers in the car. The driver has to live with this idiot's death every day for the rest of their life. They will always be wondering if they could have done more to avoid it. That, for me, is the real and ignored tragedy here.

Update from the Bolton press.

Police are appealing for two motorists to come forward. It seems CCTV footage shows this boy walking in Chew Lane, Chew Moo, towards the M61 shortly before he was hit by the Punto driver as he walked across the motorway.

The footage shows this kid walking under the bridge in Chew Lane and the footage shows two cars passing him. Police say the drivers will have seen him as he was walking in the road at that point too.

There are no witnesses and per the paper.. police need these drivers to come forward so as to piece together what happened.

Maybe these drivers may be able to say if he appeared sad, agitated, depressed , fey in manner at the time. If by any chance they browse on the internet and hit this site and they may not read the Bolton local after all.. the police would like these drivers or any other witness to this incident which occurred in the early hours of 11 March to contact them on 0161 856 8361 or 0161 856 1548.

I am sure his parents want to understand what happened in any case. Whatever the reason .. they will need to know so as to gain closure and remember the nice son they raised.

I feel more sorry for the driver in this case as he will be forever blaming himself a

:gatso2: I've just watched an edition of Road Wars on Sky Three (11.30pm) 30 March. I saw two pedestrians jay-walking across the M6 and a car load of thieving chavs who jumped from a stolen vehicle and ran across the opposite carriageway.

Believe it or not, caught on camera were two cyclists riding along the M6 (not on the hard shoulder). When caught by police one said he was on the motorway because diversion signs led him there. The other cyclist was fined £50 for cycling on the motorway.
