Can somebody please explain to me the point of 20MPH limits in town centres (or anywhere for that matter)? Such a limit has recently been introduced, together with a narrowing of the road and a reduction in roadside parking, in my local market town. All of this at considerable cost to the taxpayer.

The fact is that it is pretty well impossible to do more than 20MPH anyway and, frankly, anybody that is looking at their speedometer in such circumstances should be prosecuted for dangerous driving! Are these limits ever enforced or do the Police think that they are a joke too?

They allow councillors to prove to their electors that they have "done something about evil speeding motorists".

I would be amazed if the police spent much time enforcing the 20 mph limits that are not backed up by road humps - although there are SPECS cameras to enforce the 20 mph limit on Tower Bridge.

Also see Is Twenty Plenty? (shameless plug for own website :) )

Regards,

Peter

At 20mph you could use one of those old Victorian cameras (where the lens is uncovered for a few seconds to expose the film) to snap a 'speeding' motorist and not get any motion blur

We have 20mph stretch along A591 - goes on for long stretch each side of Ambleside too. Then NSL, back to 20mph through Grasmere. There are others throught the county.

Actually - does not bother us that much and we can at least see point - you come up here, park your car in the NT car parks and go rambling off without care in the world. Trouble is - you all forget the A591 is busy artery and wander in front of the traffic. (We also have the limit to protect the sheep! )

But beware - the Cumbrian twins patrol around here (when they get fed up of that m/way bridge around Shap). We have seen them at it!

So yes, tucano mate, they do indeed enforce a 20mph limit!

Most of the farms I have been to use fences to stop the sheep wandering where they might do themselves a danger.

And they still manage to escape!

Around here anyway!

(Check out the DSA's "What If" video - it is a cracker!) They have sheep and cows appearing "suddenly and from nowhere"

Well - they scrape the barrel every which way they can to "slow us down"

Off the thread a bit - but heard a belter this morning on a GMR radio traffic flash whilst tootling into work:

The announcer said:

"Traffic jams blah blah blah!..."

And then:

"Watch out for the jam on the M66 roadworks. The speed camera there is slowing the traffic down"!

Really - I never!

Believe it is 40mph 24/7 including Banks.

Scraping the barrel to reduce speed - so we create a traffic jam!
