Has anyone noticed the recent proliferation of 40 MPH limits in some damned silly areas?

The A102 from the blackwall tunnel was originally 60, then went to 50 when it was improved, now its down to 40. Also a local A road in croydon/bromley area has gone down from a 60 to a 40 limit. What we now get are people doddering along at 35 and all the traffic nose to tail behind them rather than flowing freely with good separation.

Also is it my imagination or do more people pay LESS attention when the speed is lower ?

Lets be frank, speed is dangerous, in inappropriate circumstances and places, but I would be happier doing 60 along an open A road with good separation between cars than being tailgated at 40 ?

Everything I see being done is making the roads less safe not more, is there any thruth in what I hear that the Oxfordshire roads that have gone down to 40 from 60 now have more accidents ?

How about in towns instituting a form of 'Jay walking' offence for those pedestrians who ignore crossings or red lights, how about enforcing the existing laws on untaxed uninsured drivers, out of date German registered cars (all the rage in South London) Cyclists who ignore red lights, crossings, one way streets, have no lights or horn (all legal requirements after dark.

I also have to put up with the new breed of bus driver who will now pull out into traffic with no indication or waiting for a space, plus road humps, and other traffic calming measures that are plain dangerous when you are out on a motorcycle.

Safety ? sorry nothing being done now has safety in mind, unless its a by product of raising revenue.

By the way, the specs system that's mentioned in another forum. If linked together could both track and time you across country, It could know where you are at any time. Some companies have apparently looked at getting the information for their reps so that they can check that they have been where they claimed !

Freedom? Sure!

I'm sure you're right and I'm sure that it applies to all unrealistically low speed limits. You will find that the ABD (Association of British Drivers) web site http://www.abd.org.uk makes several references to this point. There are of course many that do adhere to the limits and these people often cause annoyance and frustration to other drivers.
